Verse 1
Lavthavati Vikrala Brahmandmala || Vishe Kanth Kala Trinetri Jvala ||
Lavanya Sundar Mastaki Bala || Tethuniya Jal Nirmal Vahe Jhuljhula ||
Jay Dev Jay Dev Jay Shrishankara || Aarti Ovalu Tuj Vishvambhara || Jay De || 1 ||
The aarti opens with a fearsome picture of Shiva. A terrible garland called ब्रह्मांडमाळा, literally a garland of worlds (often understood as a garland of skulls; the text gives only the word), sways and swings on him (लवथवती). His throat is dark with poison and flames burn in his three eyes. On his head is a lovely young woman (बाळा), and from there pure water flows with a murmuring sound, which readers take as the Ganga in his hair; the text itself names neither Ganga nor the skulls. The refrain, written in full only here, hails Shiva as Shri Shankara and says, 'I wave the aarti to you, Vishvambhara (sustainer of all).' A footnote in the 1891 edition offers मस्तकें for मस्तकीं; the meaning is the same.
Verse 2
Karpur Gaur Bhola Nayani Vishala || Ardhangi Parvati Sumananchya Mala ||
Bhasmache Udhalan Shitikanth Nila || Aisa Shankar Shobhe Uma Velhala || Jay || 2 ||
This stanza turns to Shiva's gentle side. He is fair as camphor, simple-hearted (भोळा, the guileless god who is easily pleased) and wide-eyed. Parvati is at his side as the half of his body, and there are garlands of flowers. Ash is scattered over him, and his throat is blue (शितिकंठ). So Shankara shines, the fond companion of Uma; वेंल्हाळा is read here as 'fond, loving', and the exact shade of the old word is not certain. जय० cues the refrain. The first letter of भोळा is faint in the 1891 impression; it is read as भ, as the 1923 print also has it, and the print's long ई in वीशाळा and its वेंल्हाळा spelling are kept.
Verse 3
Vyaghrambarphanivardhar Sundar Madanari || Panchanan Munijanmanmohan Sukhkari ||
Shatkotiche Vij Vache Uchchari || Ravikultilak Ramdasa Antari || Jayde || 3 ||
Shiva wears a tiger skin and the foremost of serpents; he is beautiful, the enemy of Madana (Kama, the god of desire). He is five-faced (पंचानन), enchanting the minds of the sages, and the giver of happiness. With his speech he utters the seed of the 'hundred crore' (शतकोटीचें वीज): tradition takes this as Rama's name, the essence of a Ramayana said to have a hundred crore verses, which Shiva is said to repeat, but the line itself names only the seed. The print spells it वीज, kept here; the 1923 print has बीज, seed. The last line, रविकुळटिळक रामदासा अंतरीं, names Rama as the jewel of the solar dynasty and places him in the heart of Ramdas; it is also the poet's signature. जयदे० cues the refrain. The 1923 kirtan print sings a different fourth stanza here and a third stanza on the churning of the ocean; see the page notes.
