लवथवती विक्राळा ब्रह्मांडमाळा ॥ विषें कंठ काळा त्रिनेत्रीं ज्वाळा ॥
लावण्य सुंदर मस्तकीं बाळा ॥ तेथुनियां जळ निर्मळ वाहे झुळझूळा ॥
जय देव जय देव जय श्रीशंकरा ॥ आरती ओवाळूं तुज विश्वंभरा ॥ जय दे० ॥ १ ॥

Lavthavati Vikrala Brahmandmala || Vishe Kanth Kala Trinetri Jvala ||
Lavanya Sundar Mastaki Bala || Tethuniya Jal Nirmal Vahe Jhuljhula ||
Jay Dev Jay Dev Jay Shrishankara || Aarti Ovalu Tuj Vishvambhara || Jay De || 1 ||

English meaning: The aarti opens with a fearsome picture of Shiva. A terrible garland called ब्रह्मांडमाळा, literally a garland of worlds (often understood as a garland of skulls; the text gives only the word), sways and swings on him (लवथवती). His throat is dark with poison and flames burn in his three eyes. On his head is a lovely young woman (बाळा), and from there pure water flows with a murmuring sound, which readers take as the Ganga in his hair; the text itself names neither Ganga nor the skulls. The refrain, written in full only here, hails Shiva as Shri Shankara and says, 'I wave the aarti to you, Vishvambhara (sustainer of all).' A footnote in the 1891 edition offers मस्तकें for मस्तकीं; the meaning is the same.

Roman Hindi meaning: Aarti Shiv ke bhayankar roop ke varnan se shuru hoti hai. Un par 'Brahmandmala' naam ki vikral mala, jiska shabdik arth hai lokon ki mala (aksar ise mundmala samjha jata hai; paath mein keval yahi shabd hai), hilti-dulti hai (lavthavati). Vish se unka kanth kala hai aur teenon netron mein jvala hai. Unke mastak par ek sundar yuvati (bala) hai aur vahan se nirmal jal kalkal karta hua behta hai, jise paathak jata mein Ganga maante hain; paath khud Ganga ya mundon ka naam nahin leta. Tek, jo keval yahin poori likhi hai, Shiv ko Shri Shankar kehkar jaykar karti hai: 'He Vishvambhar (sabka paalan karne wale), main tumhari aarti utaarta hoon.' 1891 ke sanskaran ki ek paad-tippani 'mastaki' ki jagah 'mastake' deti hai; arth wahi hai.

(Kirtan Tarangini part 2, Pune 1923)

The 1891 print controls. The 1923 locative कंठीं ('in the throat') gives the same picture; it is not imported.

Stanza 1 — the figure on the head Spelling

Published: लावण्य सुंदर मस्तकीं बाळा (Ramdas Samagra Granth, Bombay 1891)

Other reading: लावण्यें सुंदर मस्तकीं बाळा (Kirtan Tarangini part 2, Pune 1923)

Other reading: लावण्य सुंदर मस्तकें बाळा (Ramdas Samagra Granth, Bombay 1891) Alternative offered in a footnote of the 1891 edition (१ मस्तकें); editorial apparatus, not the main text.

The 1891 main text is kept. Its own footnote alternative मस्तकें and the 1923 instrumental लावण्यें are spelling or case-ending differences with the same sense.

Stanza 1 — the flowing water Order

Published: तेथुनियां जळ निर्मळ वाहे झुळझूळा (Ramdas Samagra Granth, Bombay 1891)

Other reading: नेथुनियां निर्मळ जळ वाहे झुळझूळां (Kirtan Tarangini part 2, Pune 1923) नेथुनियां is a misprint for तेथुनियां; adjective and noun are in the other order.

The 1891 word order is kept. The 1923 print reverses जळ निर्मळ, adds an anusvara to झुळझूळां and misprints the first word; none of this is imported.

Refrain Wording

Published: जय देव जय देव जय श्रीशंकरा ॥ आरती ओवाळूं तुज विश्वंभरा (Ramdas Samagra Granth, Bombay 1891)

Other reading: जयदेव जयदेव जय श्रीशंकरा ॥ आरती ओंवाळूं तुज कर्पुरगौरा (Kirtan Tarangini part 2, Pune 1923)

The 1891 refrain, addressing Shiva as विश्वंभरा, controls. The 1923 kirtan print ends the refrain with कर्पुरगौरा ('fair as camphor'), the form many singers know; it is disclosed here and in the page notes, not substituted.

कर्पुर गौर भोळा नयनीं वीशाळा ॥ अर्धांगीं पार्वती सुमनांच्या माळा ॥
भस्माचें उधळण शितिकंठ नीळा ॥ ऐसा शंकर शोभे उमा वेंल्हाळा ॥ जय० ॥ २ ॥

Karpur Gaur Bhola Nayani Vishala || Ardhangi Parvati Sumananchya Mala ||
Bhasmache Udhalan Shitikanth Nila || Aisa Shankar Shobhe Uma Velhala || Jay || 2 ||

English meaning: This stanza turns to Shiva's gentle side. He is fair as camphor, simple-hearted (भोळा, the guileless god who is easily pleased) and wide-eyed. Parvati is at his side as the half of his body, and there are garlands of flowers. Ash is scattered over him, and his throat is blue (शितिकंठ). So Shankara shines, the fond companion of Uma; वेंल्हाळा is read here as 'fond, loving', and the exact shade of the old word is not certain. जय० cues the refrain. The first letter of भोळा is faint in the 1891 impression; it is read as भ, as the 1923 print also has it, and the print's long ई in वीशाळा and its वेंल्हाळा spelling are kept.

Roman Hindi meaning: Yeh chhand Shiv ke saumya roop ka varnan hai. Ve kapoor jaise gore, bhole (saral hriday, jo sahaj prasann ho jaate hain) aur vishal netron wale hain. Parvati unki ardhangini ke roop mein saath hain, aur phoolon ki malayein hain. Un par bhasma bikhri hai aur unka kanth neela hai (shitikanth). Is prakar Uma ke priya saathi Shankar shobhit hain; 'velhala' ko yahan 'premi, laad karne wala' padha gaya hai, purane shabd ki theek chhata nishchit nahin. 'Jay' tek ki or sanket hai. 1891 ki chhapai mein 'bhola' ka pehla akshar dhundhla hai; use 'bha' padha gaya hai, jaisa 1923 ki prati mein bhi hai, aur chhape 'वीशाळा' ka deergh 'ee' tatha 'वेंल्हाळा' ki vartani rakhi gayi hai.

(Kirtan Tarangini part 2, Pune 1923)

The 1891 spelling is kept: separated कर्पुर गौर, long ई in वीशाळा and सुमनांच्या. The 1923 forms are spelling differences. The first letter of भोळा is faint in the 1891 impression; both image reads take it as भ, which the 1923 print confirms.

Stanza 2 — ash and Uma Wording

Published: भस्माचें उधळण शितिकंठ नीळा ॥ ऐसा शंकर शोभे उमा वेंल्हाळा (Ramdas Samagra Granth, Bombay 1891)

Other reading: विभूतीचें उधळण शितिकंठ नीळा ॥ ऐसा शंकर शोभे उमा वेल्हाळा (Kirtan Tarangini part 2, Pune 1923)

The 1891 भस्माचें and वेंल्हाळा are kept. The 1923 विभूतीचें is a synonym (sacred ash) and its वेल्हाळा lacks the anusvara; neither is imported.

Additional stanza after stanza 2 Addition

Published: As printed on this page (Ramdas Samagra Granth, Bombay 1891)

Other reading: देवीं दैत्यीं सागर मंथन पैं केलें ॥ त्यामाजीं अवचीतां हळहळसें उठिलें ॥ तें त्वां असुरपणें प्राशन केलें ॥ नीलकंठ नाम प्रसिद्ध झालें ॥ जयदेव० ॥ (Kirtan Tarangini part 2, Pune 1923) Printed as stanza 3 of four in the 1923 kirtan book, between the 1891 stanzas 2 and 3.

The three-stanza aarti of the controlling 1891 Ramdas edition is published. The 1923 kirtan print adds a stanza on the churning of the ocean and Shiva drinking the poison (the name Nilakantha); it is disclosed here and in the page notes, not merged, because the earlier collected-works edition does not have it.

व्याघ्रांबरफणिवरधर सुंदर मदनारी ॥ पंचानन मुनिजनमनमोहन सुखकारी ॥
शतकोटीचें वीज वाचे उच्चारी ॥ रविकुळटिळक रामदासा अंतरीं ॥ जयदे० ॥ ३ ॥

Vyaghrambarphanivardhar Sundar Madanari || Panchanan Munijanmanmohan Sukhkari ||
Shatkotiche Vij Vache Uchchari || Ravikultilak Ramdasa Antari || Jayde || 3 ||

English meaning: Shiva wears a tiger skin and the foremost of serpents; he is beautiful, the enemy of Madana (Kama, the god of desire). He is five-faced (पंचानन), enchanting the minds of the sages, and the giver of happiness. With his speech he utters the seed of the 'hundred crore' (शतकोटीचें वीज): tradition takes this as Rama's name, the essence of a Ramayana said to have a hundred crore verses, which Shiva is said to repeat, but the line itself names only the seed. The print spells it वीज, kept here; the 1923 print has बीज, seed. The last line, रविकुळटिळक रामदासा अंतरीं, names Rama as the jewel of the solar dynasty and places him in the heart of Ramdas; it is also the poet's signature. जयदे० cues the refrain. The 1923 kirtan print sings a different fourth stanza here and a third stanza on the churning of the ocean; see the page notes.

Roman Hindi meaning: Shiv vyaghracharm aur shreshth naag dhaaran karte hain; ve sundar hain aur Madan (Kamdev) ke shatru hain. Ve panchmukhi (Panchanan) hain, munijanon ke man ko mohne wale aur sukh dene wale hain. Ve apni vaani se 'shatkoti' ka beej uchchaarte hain (shatkotiche vij): parampara ise Ram-naam maanti hai, arthat sau crore shlokon wali kahi jaane wali Ramayan ka saar, jise Shiv japte hain aisa kaha jaata hai; par pankti khud keval 'beej' kehti hai. Chhapai mein 'वीज' likha hai, wahi rakha gaya hai; 1923 ki prati mein 'बीज' hai. Antim pankti 'Ravikultilak Ramdasa antari' Suryavansh ke tilak Ram ka naam lekar unhein Ramdas ke antahkaran mein batati hai; yahi kavi ki naammudra bhi hai. 'Jayde' tek ki or sanket hai. 1923 ki kirtan-prati mein yahan samudra-manthan ka ek atirikt chhand hai; prishth-tippani dekhein.

Stanza 3 — Panchanan line Order

Published: पंचानन मुनिजनमनमोहन सुखकारी (Ramdas Samagra Granth, Bombay 1891)

Other reading: पंचानन मनमोहन मुनिजन सुखकारी (Kirtan Tarangini part 2, Pune 1923)

The 1891 compound मुनिजनमनमोहन ('enchanting the minds of sages') is kept; the 1923 print reorders the words. The sense is close; nothing is imported.

Stanza 3 — the seed and the signature Wording

Published: शतकोटीचें वीज वाचे उच्चारी ॥ रविकुळटिळक रामदासा अंतरीं (Ramdas Samagra Granth, Bombay 1891)

Other reading: शतकोटीचें बीज वाचे उच्चारी ॥ रघुकुळटिळक रामदासा अंतरीं (Kirtan Tarangini part 2, Pune 1923)

The 1891 वीज (with व, not the print's ब) and रविकुळटिळक ('jewel of the solar dynasty') are kept. The 1923 बीज is the usual spelling of 'seed', and रघुकुळटिळक ('jewel of Raghu's dynasty') names Rama by another lineage; both are disclosed, not adopted.

What is Lavthavati Vikrala Shiv Aarti?

Lavthavati Vikrala (Jay Dev Jay Dev Jay Shri Shankara) is the Marathi aarti to Shiva signed by Samarth Ramdas in its last line (रविकुळटिळक रामदासा). This page gives all three stanzas and the refrain as printed in the 1891 Bombay edition of Ramdas's collected works, transcribed from the page image, with a fresh Roman reading and original English, Hindi, Roman-Hindi and Marathi meanings. A 1923 kirtan book prints a longer four-stanza form ending the refrain तुज कर्पुरगौरा; that and other differences are disclosed, not blended.

Complete selected edition

All three stanzas and the refrain follow printed page 103 (scan leaf 517) of the Shri Samarth Ramdas krut Samagra Granth, the collected works of Samarth Ramdas printed by Babaji Anant Prabhu Tendulkar at the Shri Harivarda press, Bombay, in 1891. The aarti appears there under the heading आरती सांबाची (aarti to Samba, Shiva with Amba), between an aarti to Kedar and a Tuesday abhang. As in the print, the refrain is written out once after the first stanza and cued after the others; sing it after every stanza. This is a different aarti from the Hindi Om Jai Shiv Omkara on the Shiv Aarti page.

Attribution

The last line is signed रविकुळटिळक रामदासा, and the 1891 edition prints the aarti among the works of Samarth Ramdas (d. 1681/82), so Valkala gives it as his. The text is also widely sung as a Ramdas aarti in Maharashtra.

The longer sung form

A 1923 kirtan handbook, Kirtan Tarangini part 2 (Pune), prints a four-stanza form. It adds, between the 1891 stanzas 2 and 3, a stanza on the churning of the ocean in which Shiva drinks the poison and becomes known as Nilakantha. It ends the refrain तुज कर्पुरगौरा instead of तुज विश्वंभरा and signs रघुकुळटिळक. These are disclosed as variants and not blended into the 1891 text.

Text and comparison note

The 1891 page was read twice from the image. The first letter of भोळा is faint and is read as भ, agreeing with 1923; the print's वीशाळा, वेंल्हाळा and वीज are kept as printed, and a footnote's alternative मस्तकें is disclosed. Line breaks at the half-line daṇḍas are the only presentation change. No word is emended.

Reading and claims

In many Maharashtra homes this aarti is sung to Shiva, often on Mondays, at Mahashivratri and in the sequence of aartis during Ganeshotsav; it is an optional devotional reading, not a required ritual. Its imagery of poison, flame, ash and skulls is traditional iconography, and nothing on this page asks for an offering, purchase, flame or fixed count.
