Roman Hindi meaning: Phalashruti (samapan-shlok, aath shlokon mein se ek nahin): yeh Rudrashtak vipra (brahman) ne Har ko prasann karne ke liye kaha; shlok kehta hai ki jo log ise bhakti se padhte hain, un par Shambhu prasann hote hain. Valkala ise stotra ka apna kathan maankar prastut karta hai, kisi nishchit parinaam ka vaada nahin.

What is Shri Rudrashtakam?

Rudrashtakam is an eight-stanza Sanskrit hymn to Shiva in the Uttarakand of Goswami Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, praising him as formless Brahman and as the compassionate Shankara. A separate ninth verse says Shambhu is pleased with those who recite it with devotion; that is the text's own claim.

From the Ramcharitmanas

Rudrashtakam stands in the Uttarakand of Goswami Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, between dohas 107 and 108 in the Gita Press numbering. In Kakbhushundi's account of a former life, his Brahmin guru, seeing Shiva's curse fall on his disciple, bows before Shiva and sings this hymn to seek grace; Shiva answers in the lines that follow. Unlike the surrounding Awadhi verse, the hymn is in Sanskrit, in the bhujangaprayata metre. This page gives the hymn itself, not the surrounding narrative.

Formless and with form

The hymn praises Shiva as formless, beyond the gunas and the root of Omkara, and also as the fair, compassionate Shankara with Ganga, the crescent moon and serpents.

Eight stanzas and a phalashruti

The eight stanzas are followed by a separate verse in a different metre. It says the hymn was spoken by a brahmin to please Hara, and that Shambhu is pleased with those who recite it with devotion. Valkala presents this as the text's own statement.

Source

The text follows the Gita Press Mool Gutka edition of the Ramcharitmanas (Gorakhpur, 1945), printed pages 626–627, checked against Sanskrit Wikisource. The print writes the anusvara at the end of each half-line (रूपं, भजेऽहं), as Tulsidas's text is traditionally printed, and this page keeps that.
