Verse 1
Yagyena Yagyamayajanta Devastani Dharmani Prathamanyasan |
Te Ha Nakam Mahimanah Sachanta Yatra Purve Sadhyah Santi Devah ||
With sacrifice the gods worshipped the sacrifice; these were the first ordinances (dharmas). Those mighty ones reached the vault of heaven, where the Sadhyas, the earlier gods, dwell. This is the closing verse of the Purusha Sukta (Rigveda 10.90.16), which describes the gods' first sacrifice of the cosmic Person; the same verse also stands at Rigveda 1.164.50. Reaching heaven is what the verse says of those first sacrificers, not a promise made to the reciter.
Verse 2
Om Rajadhirajaya Prasahyasahine | Namo Vayam Vaishravanaya Kurmahe |
Sa Me Kamankamakamaya Mahyam | Kameshvaro Vaishravano Dadatu |
Kuberaya Vaishravanaya | Maharajaya Namah ||
To the king of kings, who prevails by his might, we pay homage: to Vaishravana. May he, Vaishravana the lord of desires, grant my desires to me, who desire them. Homage to Kubera Vaishravana, the great king. In the Taittiriya Aranyaka (1.31.6) this formula honours Vaishravana, that is Kubera, the guardian of wealth, within an offering rite. The request for wishes is the prayer of the text, not an assured result. ॐ before the formula is the recitation's opening in both prints and is not part of the Aranyaka passage.
Verse 3
Om Svasti Samrajyam Bhaujyam Svarajyam Vairajyam Parameshthyam Rajyam
Maharajyamadhipatyamayam Samantaparyayi Syatsarvabhaumah
Sarvayusha Antadaparardhat
Prithivyai Samudraparyantaya Ekaraliti ||
Svasti: may it be well. The words then list ranks of rule: universal sovereignty, enjoyment (bhaujya), self-rule, distinguished rule (vairajya), the highest station, kingship, great kingship and overlordship; that he be all-encompassing and ruler of all the land, possessing the whole span of life to its farthest limit, sole ruler of the earth as far as the ocean. In the Aitareya Brahmana (8.15) the passage belongs to Indra's great consecration (aindra mahabhisheka) of a king and states what the consecrated king is said to attain. Sovereignty and long life here describe that royal rite; they are not claims about the reciter. The exact distinctions among the titles are not settled, so conventional renderings are given. The print's माहाराज्यम्, with a long ā, agrees with the 1896 Anandashrama edition; ॐ स्वस्ति is the recitation's opening and is not in the Brahmana.
Verse 4
Tadapyesha Shlokobhigito
Marutah Pariveshtaro Maruttasyavasangrihe |
Avikshitasya Kamaprervishve Devah Sabhasada Iti ||
On this, too, a verse is sung: the Maruts were the attendants who served at table in the house of Marutta; the All-gods (Vishvedevas) sat as members of the assembly of Avikshit's son, whose every wish was fulfilled. In the Aitareya Brahmana (8.21) the verse closes the account of the sage Samvarta Angirasa consecrating King Marutta, son of Avikshit, with the same great consecration. The picture of gods serving at a king's house is the Brahmana's praise of that rite. The 1927 print joins श्लोकोभिगीतो without the avagraha mark (ऽ) that other prints write for the dropped a; the pronunciation is the same.
Verse 5
Yo Vai Tam Brahmano Veda | Amritenavritam Purim |
Tasmai Brahma Cha Brahma Cha | Ayuh Kirtim Prajam Daduh ||
Whoever knows that city of Brahman, enveloped in immortality, to that person Brahman and Brahma have given life, fame and offspring. In the Taittiriya Aranyaka (1.27.3) the verse follows the image of the gods' unconquerable city with eight circles and nine gates; Bhatta Bhaskara's commentary reads the city as the abode of Brahman surrounded by immortal light. Life, fame and offspring are what the text says of the knower; they are not a promise to the reciter. This part belongs to the 1927 puja print; the 2000 Shirdi aarti book ends its recitation before it.
