यज्ञेन यज्ञमयजंत देवास्तानि धर्माणि प्रथमान्यासन्।
ते ह नाकं महिमानः सचंत यत्र पूर्वे साध्याः संति देवाः॥

Yagyena Yagyamayajanta Devastani Dharmani Prathamanyasan |
Te Ha Nakam Mahimanah Sachanta Yatra Purve Sadhyah Santi Devah ||

English meaning: With sacrifice the gods worshipped the sacrifice; these were the first ordinances (dharmas). Those mighty ones reached the vault of heaven, where the Sadhyas, the earlier gods, dwell. This is the closing verse of the Purusha Sukta (Rigveda 10.90.16), which describes the gods' first sacrifice of the cosmic Person; the same verse also stands at Rigveda 1.164.50. Reaching heaven is what the verse says of those first sacrificers, not a promise made to the reciter.

Roman Hindi meaning: Devtaon ne yagya ke dwara yagya ka poojan kiya; ve hi pratham dharma (vidhan) the. Ve mahimashali dev us naak (swargalok) ko pahunche, jahan purvavarti Sadhya devta rehte hain. Yeh Purusha Sukta ka antim mantra (Rigveda 10.90.16) hai, jo Virat Purush ke aadi-yagya ka varnan karta hai; yahi mantra Rigveda 1.164.50 mein bhi aata hai. Swarg pahunchne ki baat un pratham yagyakartaon ke vishay mein mantra ka kathan hai, paath karne wale ke liye koi vachan nahin.

Om Rajadhirajaya Prasahyasahine | Namo Vayam Vaishravanaya Kurmahe |
Sa Me Kamankamakamaya Mahyam | Kameshvaro Vaishravano Dadatu |
Kuberaya Vaishravanaya | Maharajaya Namah ||

English meaning: To the king of kings, who prevails by his might, we pay homage: to Vaishravana. May he, Vaishravana the lord of desires, grant my desires to me, who desire them. Homage to Kubera Vaishravana, the great king. In the Taittiriya Aranyaka (1.31.6) this formula honours Vaishravana, that is Kubera, the guardian of wealth, within an offering rite. The request for wishes is the prayer of the text, not an assured result. ॐ before the formula is the recitation's opening in both prints and is not part of the Aranyaka passage.

Roman Hindi meaning: Rajaon ke raja, apne bal se sab par vijay pane wale Vaishravan ko hum namaskar karte hain. Kamanaon ke swami ve Vaishravan mujh kamana karne wale ko meri kamanayen pradan karein. Vaishravan Kuber Maharaj ko namaskar. Taittiriya Aranyaka (1.31.6) mein yeh mantra ek bali-karma ke prasang mein dhan ke rakshak Vaishravan arthat Kuber ka samman karta hai. Kamana-poorti ki maang granth ki prarthana hai, nishchit parinam ka vachan nahin. Aarambh ka Om dono chhape paathon mein paath ki shuruaat hai, Aranyaka ke ansh ka bhaag nahin.

Om Svasti Samrajyam Bhaujyam Svarajyam Vairajyam Parameshthyam Rajyam
Maharajyamadhipatyamayam Samantaparyayi Syatsarvabhaumah
Sarvayusha Antadaparardhat
Prithivyai Samudraparyantaya Ekaraliti ||

English meaning: Svasti: may it be well. The words then list ranks of rule: universal sovereignty, enjoyment (bhaujya), self-rule, distinguished rule (vairajya), the highest station, kingship, great kingship and overlordship; that he be all-encompassing and ruler of all the land, possessing the whole span of life to its farthest limit, sole ruler of the earth as far as the ocean. In the Aitareya Brahmana (8.15) the passage belongs to Indra's great consecration (aindra mahabhisheka) of a king and states what the consecrated king is said to attain. Sovereignty and long life here describe that royal rite; they are not claims about the reciter. The exact distinctions among the titles are not settled, so conventional renderings are given. The print's माहाराज्यम्, with a long ā, agrees with the 1896 Anandashrama edition; ॐ स्वस्ति is the recitation's opening and is not in the Brahmana.

Roman Hindi meaning: Svasti — kalyan ho. Aage shasan ke padon ki soochi hai: samrajya, bhaujya, swarajya, vairajya, parameshthya, rajya, maharajya aur adhipatya; vah sab or vyapak aur sampoorn bhoomi ka swami (sarvabhaum) ho, aayu ki antim seema tak poorn aayu wala ho, aur samudra-paryant prithvi ka ekmatra raja (ekarat) ho. Aitareya Brahmana (8.15) mein yeh ansh raja ke Aindra Mahabhishek ka hai aur batata hai ki abhishikt raja kya prapt karta hai, aisa kaha gaya hai. Satta aur deerghayu ka yeh varnan us rajkiya anushthan ka hai, paath karne wale ke baare mein dava nahin. In padon ke sookshm bhed nishchit nahin hain, isliye prachalit arth diye gaye hain. Chhape paath ka 'maharajyam' (deergh aa) 1896 ke Anandashram sanskaran se mel khata hai; 'Om Svasti' paath ki shuruaat hai, Brahmana-granth mein nahin.

The recitation prints open with ॐ स्वस्ति and stop at एकराळिति; the page follows them and says in the meaning that the opening is not part of the Brahmana.

Part 3 — nasal and avagraha spelling Spelling

तदप्येष श्लोकोभिगीतो
मरुतः परिवेष्टारो मरुत्तस्यावसन्गृहे।
आविक्षितस्य कामप्रेर्विश्वे देवाः सभासद इति॥

Tadapyesha Shlokobhigito
Marutah Pariveshtaro Maruttasyavasangrihe |
Avikshitasya Kamaprervishve Devah Sabhasada Iti ||

English meaning: On this, too, a verse is sung: the Maruts were the attendants who served at table in the house of Marutta; the All-gods (Vishvedevas) sat as members of the assembly of Avikshit's son, whose every wish was fulfilled. In the Aitareya Brahmana (8.21) the verse closes the account of the sage Samvarta Angirasa consecrating King Marutta, son of Avikshit, with the same great consecration. The picture of gods serving at a king's house is the Brahmana's praise of that rite. The 1927 print joins श्लोकोभिगीतो without the avagraha mark (ऽ) that other prints write for the dropped a; the pronunciation is the same.

Roman Hindi meaning: Is vishay mein bhi yeh shlok gaya gaya hai: Marut devta Marutta ke ghar mein bhojan parosne wale sevak the; Avikshit ke putra, jiski sab kamanayen poori thin, uski sabha mein Vishvedev sabhasad the. Aitareya Brahmana (8.21) mein yeh shlok us vrittant ko poora karta hai jismein rishi Samvarta Angiras ne Avikshit ke putra Raja Marutta ka isi mahabhishek se abhishek kiya. Raja ke ghar devtaon ke seva karne ka chitra us anushthan ki Brahmana-granth dwara ki gayi prashansa hai. 1927 ka chhapa paath 'shlokobhigito' ko avagraha chihn (ऽ) ke bina jodkar chhapta hai, jise anya paath lupt a ke liye likhte hain; uchcharan vahi hai.

Spelling

Other reading: श्लोकोऽभिगीतो (Sainath Sagunopasana, Shirdi 2000)

Other reading: श्लोकोऽभिगीतः (Aitareya Brahmana, Anandashrama 1896) Pausa form; the Brahmana closes the sentence with इति before quoting the verse.

Both 1927 copies, and the same book's second mantrapushpa list (leaf 142), omit the avagraha. The print is followed and the meaning explains the elided a; the pronunciation is the same.

यो वै तां ब्रह्मणो वेद। अमृतेनावृतां पुरीं।
तस्मै ब्रह्म च ब्रह्मा च। आयुः कीर्तिं प्रजां ददुः॥

Yo Vai Tam Brahmano Veda | Amritenavritam Purim |
Tasmai Brahma Cha Brahma Cha | Ayuh Kirtim Prajam Daduh ||

English meaning: Whoever knows that city of Brahman, enveloped in immortality, to that person Brahman and Brahma have given life, fame and offspring. In the Taittiriya Aranyaka (1.27.3) the verse follows the image of the gods' unconquerable city with eight circles and nine gates; Bhatta Bhaskara's commentary reads the city as the abode of Brahman surrounded by immortal light. Life, fame and offspring are what the text says of the knower; they are not a promise to the reciter. This part belongs to the 1927 puja print; the 2000 Shirdi aarti book ends its recitation before it.

Roman Hindi meaning: Jo amrit se aavrit Brahm ki us puri ko janta hai, use Brahm aur Brahma ne aayu, kirti aur praja (santan) di hai. Taittiriya Aranyaka (1.27.3) mein yeh mantra aath chakron aur nau dwaron wali devtaon ki ajey puri ke varnan ke baad aata hai; Bhatta Bhaskar ki teeka is puri ko amrit-jyoti se ghira Brahm ka dham maanti hai. Aayu, kirti aur santan ki baat jaanne wale ke vishay mein granth ka kathan hai, paath karne wale ko diya gaya vachan nahin. Yeh ansh 1927 ke pooja-granth mein hai; 2000 ki Shirdi aarti-pustika ka paath isse pehle samapt ho jata hai.

What is Mantra Pushpanjali?

Mantra Pushpanjali (मंत्रपुष्पांजली) is the Vedic flower-offering recitation said at the close of a puja and, in many Maharashtra homes, at the end of the Ganpati aarti sequence. This page gives it in full as printed in a 1927 Bombay puja manual: five Vedic passages from the Rigveda (10.90.16), the Taittiriya Aranyaka (1.31.6 and 1.27.3) and the Aitareya Brahmana (8.15 and 8.21), without accent marks, with a Roman reading and original English, Hindi, Roman-Hindi and Marathi meanings. Differences from the Vedic editions and from a later Marathi aarti book are disclosed, not blended.

Complete selected form

All five parts follow devapuja unit 16 of the Hiranyakeshiya Brahmakarma Samuccaya edited by Vasudev Laxman Shastri Pansikar and printed at the Nirnaya-sagar Press, Bombay, in 1927 (Shaka 1849). Two copies of that edition were read from the page images and agree in every syllable. The print's Vedic accent marks, its separators after every phrase and its closing dedication to a Vishnu-led five-deity puja are left out; households end with an offering formula for their own deity, for example मंत्रपुष्पांजलिं समर्पयामि. Words are spaced as the Vedic editions space them; no syllable is changed.

Where each part comes from

Part 1 is Rigveda 10.90.16, the last verse of the Purusha Sukta (also Rigveda 1.164.50). Part 2 is Taittiriya Aranyaka 1.31.6, homage to Vaishravana (Kubera). Part 3 is Aitareya Brahmana 8.15, from the great consecration of a king. Part 4 is Aitareya Brahmana 8.21, the verse on King Marutta. Part 5 is Taittiriya Aranyaka 1.27.3. Each locator was confirmed in a public-domain edition: Max Müller's Rigveda (1873), the Mysore Taittiriya Aranyaka with Bhatta Bhaskara's commentary (1900) and the Anandashrama Aitareya Brahmana with Sayana's commentary (1896).

Text and comparison note

The recitation adds ॐ before parts 2 and 3 and स्वस्ति before part 3, which the Vedic texts do not have there. The 1927 print reads माहाराज्यम्, as the 1896 Aitareya edition also does, and writes श्लोकोभिगीतो without an avagraha. The 2000 Shirdi Sai Sagunopasana, a Marathi aarti book, prints the same first four parts at the close of its aarti sequence but stops before part 5, adds ॐ before part 1, and reads दधातु for ददातु. These readings are listed as variants and none is imported. The four-part form is the one many Marathi aarti books print; this page keeps the full 1927 unit as the owner's scope decision asks.

Reading and claims

Mantra Pushpanjali is an optional closing offering. Its words about heaven, wishes, sovereignty, long life, fame and offspring belong to the Vedic contexts they come from: a cosmic sacrifice, an offering rite, a royal consecration and a hymn about the knower of Brahman. They are not promised results of recitation. No flower count, posture, priest or particular puja is required by this page.
