What is Shri Gayatri Mantra?

The Gayatri Mantra asks Savitr, the life-giving solar deity, to inspire and guide our understanding. The core verse is Rigveda 3.62.10. The opening 'Om bhur bhuvah svah' shown here is the widely used liturgical prefix and is not part of the core Rigvedic verse itself.

Source and form

Rigveda 3.62.10 begins with tat savitur varenyam and is traditionally associated with the sage Vishvamitra. In daily prayer it is commonly preceded by Om and the three vyahritis—bhur, bhuvah, svah. This page displays that familiar recitation form while identifying the source precisely.

Meaning in brief

The mantra is a meditation on the worthy radiance of Savitr. Its petition is directed toward the intellect: may that divine radiance impel or inspire our thoughts. English renderings vary because Sanskrit terms such as bhargas, dhimahi, and pracodayat carry more nuance than a single English equivalent.
