Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Aarti

Source: Internet Archive — Shanivar Vrata Katha, Sumit Publication, printed page 14 (selected undated CC0-marked print). Also compared: Internet Archive — Shri Shanaishcharji Ki Katha, Khemraj 2002, printed page 48 (visual comparison only).

Verse 1

Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari |
Suraj Ke Putra Prabhu Chhaya Mahtari ||
Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari ||

Glory, glory to Shri Shani Dev, whom the aarti calls the benefactor of devotees. It names the Lord as the son of Surya, the sun, with Chhaya as his mother.

Verse 2

Shyam Ank Vakra Drisht Chaturbhuja Dhari |
Neelambar Dhar Nath Gaj Ki Asvari ||
Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari ||

The aarti pictures him dark in form, with a sidelong gaze and four arms, wearing blue and riding an elephant. The print's अंक and दृष्ट are kept and read as form and gaze. The sidelong gaze is the hymn's devotional image of Shani, not an astrological diagnosis of anyone.

Verse 3

Kreet Mukut Sheesh Sajat Dipat Hai Lilanri |
Muktan Ki Mal Gale Shobhit Balihari ||
Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari ||

A crown adorns his head and his forehead shines. A garland of pearls graces his neck, and the singer is enraptured by the sight. लिलांरी is kept as printed and read as the forehead.

Verse 4

Modak Mishtan Paan Chadhat Hain Supari |
Loha Til Tel Urad Mahishi Ati Pyari ||
Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari ||

The aarti says modak, sweets, betel leaf and areca nut are offered to him, and that iron, sesame, oil, urad and the buffalo are very dear to him. These are the hymn's traditional associations. They are not required purchases, and the page does not ask anyone to offer or handle an animal.

Verse 5

Dev Danuj Rishi Muni Surat Nar Nari |
Vishwanath Dharat Dhyan Sharan Hain Tumhari ||
Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari ||

Gods, demons, sages, ascetics, men and women remember him. Vishwanath, a name of Shiva, holds him in meditation, and all are in his refuge. सुरत is kept as printed and read as remembrance. The print names no author, and the comparison print has 'devotees' where this one has Vishwanath. This is devotional praise, not a promise that worship removes hardship.
