1. What Dussehra Marks

Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, falls on the tenth day, just after Navratri. It marks the victory of good over evil — celebrated in much of the north as Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, and in the east and elsewhere as Maa Durga's victory over Mahishasura. Both strands share the same meaning: the triumph of dharma.

2. Dussehra 2026: When It Falls

In 2026, Vijayadashami is observed in October, on the tenth day (Dashami) following the nine nights of Navratri. As with all tithi-based festivals, confirm the exact date and any muhurat for your city in a reliable Panchang.

3. Observances of the Day

• Shastra Puja: tools, implements and, traditionally, weapons are cleaned and honoured — today many extend this to the instruments of their work.
• Aparajita and Shami Puja: the goddess Aparajita is worshipped for success, and Shami leaves are exchanged in several regions.
• Ravana Dahan: effigies of Ravana are burned at public grounds in the evening, marking the victory of good.

What is emphasised differs widely by region and family, so follow your own tradition.
