(The Eternal Soul, Duty & Qualities of a Self-Realized Person).

Karpanyadoshopahatasvabhavah Prichchhami Tvam Dharmasammudhachetas |
Yachchreyah Syan Nishchitam Bruhi Tanme Shishyaste'ham Shadhi Mam Tvam Prapannam ||

Now I am confused about my duty and have lost all composure due to faint-heartedness. I ask You: tell me clearly what is best for me. I am Your disciple, surrendered unto You; please instruct me.

Shri Bhagavan Uvacha |
Ashochyananvashochastvam Prajnavadamshcha Bhashase |
Gatasunagatasumshcha Nanushochanti Panditah ||

The Supreme Lord said: You speak words of wisdom, yet you grieve for that which is not worthy of grief. The wise grieve neither for the living nor for the dead.

Na Tvevaham Jatu Nasam Na Tvam Neme Janadhipah |
Na Chaiva Na Bhavishyamah Sarve Vayramatah Param ||

Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to exist.

Dehino'smin Yatha Dehe Kaumaram Yauvanam Jara |
Tatha Dehantarapraptir Dhirastatra Na Muhyati ||

Just as the embodied soul continuously passes in this body from childhood to youth to old age, similarly at death the soul passes into another body. The wise person is not bewildered by this.

Na Jayate Mriyate Va Kadachin Nayam Bhutva Bhavita Va Na Bhuyah |
Ajo Nityah Shashvato'yam Purano Na Hanyate Hanyamane Sharire ||

The soul is never born, nor does it ever die; nor having once been, does it cease to be. Unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval, it is not slain when the body is slain.

Vasamsi Jirnani Yatha Vihaya Navani Grihnati Naro'parani |
Tatha Sharirani Vihaya Jirnanyanyani Samyati Navani Dehi ||

As a person casts off worn-out garments and puts on new ones, so the embodied soul casts off worn-out bodies and enters into new ones.

Nainam Chhindanti Shastrani Nainam Dahati Pavakah |
Na Chainam Kledayantyapo Na Shoshayati Marutah ||

Weapons cannot cleave the soul, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, and the wind cannot dry it away.

Karmanyevadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana |
Ma Karmaphalaheturbhurma Te Sango'stvakarmani ||

You have a right performing your prescribed duty, but never to its fruits. Let not the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction.

Vihaya Kamanyah Sarvan Pumamshcharati Nishprihah |
Nirmamo Nirahankarah Sa Shantimadhigachchhati ||

That person who relinquishes all desires for sense gratification, living free from possessiveness, ego, and desire—attains supreme peace.
