Hanuman Photo Direction at Home: South-Facing and Panchmukhi Images

Understand south-facing Hanuman advice, Panchmukhi images and the difference between a wall location and the direction the picture faces.

झटपट सार · Hindi and Hinglish summary

Dakshinmukhi Hanuman ka matlab chitra ka mukh dakshin ki or hai, south wall par lagana nahin. Aaj ke sources isse parampara ka paramarsh batate hain; ek disha sabke liye zaroori nahin. Panchmukhi chitra ke liye apni family ya mandir parampara poochhein. Chhote ghar mein saaf, surakshit pooja ki jagah chunen; disha se bhakti amaanya nahin hoti.

For a Hanuman photo at home, distinguish where it hangs from which way its face points. South-facing Hanuman is one contemporary recommendation, not a rule established here for every household. Keep the image in your family's prayer space and follow its established custom. A wall that cannot match an online direction does not make devotion invalid.

For the separate object question, see Hanuman posture, idol and photo choices.

Classical statement: the shrine, not Hanuman's face

Brihat Samhita 53.118, in Iyer's translation, places the Devas' room in the north-east. It does not specify a Hanuman photograph's facing. The home temple direction guide explains that wider location question.

Contemporary guidance: what the two sources say

Dev Aastha recommends a south-facing Hanuman image and also describes east or north-east family-shrine placement. Svastika describes south-facing Hanuman as regional practice rather than a universal textual instruction. These are commercial publishers describing custom; their agreement that the practice exists does not establish that everyone must follow it.

Neither retailer's broader statements about all scriptures are adopted here. We have not surveyed every Purana or temple manual. Nor does a narrative about Hanuman establish a compass rule for a household picture. Your family, temple or guru tradition comes before a general placement article.

Practical note: south-facing is not the south wall

A flat picture on the north wall, with its front pointing into the room, faces south. A picture on the south wall faces north. When you stand directly before it, your own facing is opposite the picture's. Mark the direction the front points toward before comparing advice; the wall name alone can reverse the answer.

  • A picture facing south means a devotee directly before it faces north.
  • A picture facing west means that devotee faces east.
  • A picture facing east means that devotee faces west.

These are geometric descriptions, not a ranking of acceptable worship. See which direction to face during puja for the separate prayer-facing question. Do not rotate a settled family shrine merely to satisfy a different website.

Panchmukhi Hanuman photographs

A five-faced image raises a different question from an ordinary frontal portrait. The directions represented within its iconography are not five instructions for choosing a wall. This page does not prescribe a Panchmukhi installation, special vow or ritual. If your image belongs to an established worship tradition, ask that temple or teacher about its care. Avoid treating a seller's picture label as a complete ritual manual.

A workable place in a small home

First check whether you can see the image comfortably from your usual prayer position. Secure a frame so it cannot fall when someone opens a nearby door. Leave the shelf easy to clean, and keep a phone or prayer book where it can be read without balancing it against the frame. A smaller arrangement may be easier to use than a crowded wall of pictures.

If one room serves several purposes, reserve a clean corner or cabinet for prayer and protect the image from cooking splashes and accidental knocks. A separate room is not necessary for this practical arrangement. Choosing the usable corner is Valkala's fallback advice, not a newly inferred classical direction.

Keep placement separate from the reading

For a complete reading, open the Hanuman Chalisa or Hanuman Aarti. The Tuesday Hanuman practice guide covers optional practice; the Hanuman collection helps you choose a text. None requires buying a new image or changing its direction before reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a Hanuman photo be placed on the south wall?

A photo flat against the south wall normally faces north. South-facing means its front points south, often from a north wall. That describes geometry; follow your own worship tradition for placement.

Must every Hanuman photo face south?

The checked contemporary sources describe south-facing practice, but this page establishes no universal scripture rule. Keep your family or temple arrangement; a constrained direction does not invalidate devotion.

Where should a Panchmukhi Hanuman photo go?

Use your established prayer space and ask the relevant temple or teacher about tradition-specific care. The five faces in the image do not supply five wall-placement instructions.
