Lakshmi Ganesh Idol Placement: Left or Right, Height and Direction

The usual rule is that Lakshmi sits on Ganesha's right. But 'right' is read from two viewpoints, so guides disagree about what you see. Here is how to set the pair up for Diwali and daily puja.

Quick answer: The rule most families quote is that Lakshmi sits on Ganesha's right. Guides disagree about what that looks like from the front, because "right" can be read from the deity's side or from yours. No Puranic passage that we or the guides we checked could find fixes the order. So: if your family has an arrangement, keep it. If not, choose one reading, place both images at the same height, facing the same way, ideally in the north-east of the home, and always begin the puja with Ganesha.

Why "left or right" is confusing

Images on a shrine face you. Their right hand is on your left. So "Lakshmi on Ganesha's right" gives two different pictures:

• Reading it from the deities' side: Lakshmi sits on Ganesha's own right hand. Standing in front, you see Lakshmi on your left and Ganesha on your right. Svastika's guide gives this arrangement.
• Reading it from where you stand: you see Ganesha on your left and Lakshmi on your right. Dev Aastha's guide gives this arrangement and notes that some families do the reverse.

Both guides describe their own arrangement as the usual one. The Svastika guide states plainly that it found no Puranic passage laying down the order. We treat this as a genuine variation in household custom, not a mistake to be corrected.

What everyone agrees on

• Ganesha is worshipped first. Whatever the side, the puja begins with Ganesha.
• Same height, side by side. Keep both on one clean, raised surface such as a chowki, with a little space between them.
• Face the same way. Don't turn the images towards each other.

Adding Saraswati

Many households, especially for Diwali, add Saraswati to make a trio. Dev Aastha describes the order, as seen from the front, as Ganesha on the left, Lakshmi in the centre and Saraswati on the right, with Lakshmi in the middle as the presiding deity of the Diwali puja. Treat this as one common arrangement. A Lakshmi-Ganesh pair without Saraswati is complete for Lakshmi Puja.

Choosing the images

For Diwali, many families buy a new pair or a new printed Lakshmi-Ganesh image every year and keep the old one respectfully, or immerse it according to family practice. For a permanent shrine, choose images you can keep clean easily. Brass and marble are common. Seated Lakshmi images are widely preferred for the home.
