What is Vivah Panchami?

The story of the wedding
King Janaka of Mithila held a swayamvara for his daughter Sita: whoever could string the bow of Lord Shiva would marry her. Every king and prince who tried failed. Rama, son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, lifted the bow and broke it while stringing it, and the wedding was held in Janakpuri, which is identified with present-day Janakpur in Nepal.
