Puja outline
- Nahay Khay: bathe early, clean the home thoroughly and take one simple, sattvic meal, traditionally kaddu-bhat.
- Kharna: fast through the day and break it in the evening with the Kharna prasad after worship. Many vratis then keep a waterless fast until the final arghya.
- Sandhya Arghya: at sunset, stand at a river bank or water body and offer arghya to the setting sun with the prepared prasad.
- Usha Arghya: before sunrise the next morning, return to the water and offer arghya to the rising sun.
- After the morning arghya, break the fast (parana) and share the prasad.
- The waterless fast is demanding. Anyone unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication should take advice, and take care near deep or crowded water.

What is Chhath Puja?
Chhath Puja, also called Surya Shashthi, is dedicated to Surya, the Sun, and to Usha, worshipped as Chhathi Maiya. Prokerala describes it as a way of thanking the Sun for sustaining life, and Drik Panchang notes that it is mainly celebrated in Bihar and neighbouring regions. It is also widely kept in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and by families from these regions across India and abroad.
The four days
Chhath falls on the sixth day (Shashthi) of the bright fortnight that begins after Diwali, and its observance runs for four days. Nahay Khay, on Kartika Shukla Chaturthi, begins with a purifying bath and a single simple meal. On Kharna, the Panchami, vratis fast during the day and break it in the evening with prasad. The main day, Shashthi, ends with the evening arghya to the setting sun, and on Saptami the morning arghya to the rising sun is followed by parana.
Why sunset and sunrise matter
The two arghyas are offered at sunset and sunrise, and those times differ from city to city. This page gives only dates. Take the sunset and sunrise times for your ghat from a panchang set to your location.
How these dates were checked
All four days for 2026 and 2027 were checked for New Delhi on 29 September 2026 and appear on the same day in Drik Panchang's Chhath calendar and Prokerala. The Government of India's 2027 restricted-holiday list also gives 4 November 2027 for Chhath. No clock times are shown.
