When are Holika Dahan and Holi in 2027?
For New Delhi, Prokerala and the Government of India's 2027 holiday list give 22 March for Holika Dahan and 23 March for Holi. Drik Panchang gives 21 March for Holika Dahan and 22 March for Rangwali Holi. Valkala does not silently choose between the sequences: the majority-source dates are the main cards and the Drik dates are shown as other dates.
The two days of Holi
Holika Dahan, also called Chhoti Holi, is marked by a community bonfire on the evening before the colour celebration. Rangwali Holi, Dhulandi or Dulhendi follows with gulal, coloured water, greetings, music and shared food. Customs and names vary by region, and this page gives no universal clock time for the bonfire.
The traditional story of Prahlada and Holika
A widely told festival account says that King Hiranyakashipu opposed his son Prahlada's devotion to Vishnu. Holika entered a fire with Prahlada intending to harm him, but the story says that Prahlada survived while Holika burned. Holika Dahan is therefore commonly understood as a symbol of devotion and good prevailing over harm. This is a concise original retelling of a living sacred legend, not a copied scripture translation or a historical claim.
Holi, Krishna and spring
Holi is also associated with spring and with the playful Radha-Krishna traditions of Braj. The Ministry of Tourism's Incredible India account presents the bonfire, the Prahlada-Holika story and the colour play as connected but distinct parts of the festival. No single regional custom is treated here as compulsory for every family.
A safer, considerate colour celebration
Use colour only with consent and avoid directing powder or water at the face. Keep young children away from an unmanaged bonfire and leave its handling to responsible organisers. The Ministry of Environment's Eco-Club campaign promotes biodegradable colours made from sources such as leafy vegetables, beetroot, turmeric and palash as a lower-impact alternative to synthetic colours.
How the dates and account were checked
The 2027 dates are for New Delhi and were checked on 29 September 2026. Prokerala and the Government of India agree on the 22–23 March sequence; Drik Panchang publishes the 21–22 March sequence. The festival account was checked against Drik Panchang and the Government of India's Incredible India portal, and the colour guidance against the Ministry of Environment campaign.
