Diya Direction: Where to Place the Lamp in the Puja Room and on Dhanteras

In the puja room the diya goes in front of the deity, often towards the south-east. The one lamp with a traditional fixed direction is the Yama lamp on Dhanteras, which faces south.

The diya in the puja room

• Position: in front of the images, not behind them, so the light falls on the deity and you can see the flame while you pray.
• Side: current guides often suggest the south-east side of the shrine (Agni kon). If your shrine is a narrow shelf, directly in front is enough.
• Distance: keep clear of cloth, paper pictures, dried flowers, curtains and incense ash.
• Surface: a metal plate or a thali under the diya catches oil and heat.

Yama lamp on Dhanteras: why it faces south

On the evening of Dhanteras (Dhanatrayodashi), many households light a lamp for Yama, the god of death. The practice is called yamadipadan or Yama deepam. The lamps are placed at the doorway of the home, as described in the scholarly account Wikipedia cites (Pintchman, 2005). Traditionally the lamps face the southern direction, which is associated with Yama. Some families light a single lamp and others light thirteen. Wheat-flour or earthen lamps with oil are common.

Lamps at the main door and through Diwali

During Diwali, lamps are placed on both sides of the main entrance, on window ledges and along the threshold. The aim is to light the whole house, and no fixed direction is required for these decorative rows. Keep door lamps out of the way of feet, saris, dupattas and children. Flame safety

• Never leave a lit diya, akhand jyot or Yama lamp unattended, or burning overnight in an empty room.
• Keep lamps on a non-flammable surface, away from curtains, clothing, paper images and synthetic decorations.
• Keep matches and oil away from children. Keep water or sand nearby during Diwali.
• Ventilate the room if you also burn incense or camphor.
