Durga Idol Direction: Home Mandir and Navratri Chowki Placement
Place a Durga image or Navratri chowki with room for prayer; see why contemporary sources disagree about a south-facing idol.
झटपट सार · Hindi and Hinglish summary
Place a Durga image on a stable, dedicated shrine surface with space to sit or stand before it. North-east shrine location is the common starting point in the two guides checked here. The direction Durga's face points is a separate question, and those publishers disagree about a south-facing idol. Follow your family or temple arrangement rather than treating either article as a universal rule.
Classical statement: a location for the shrine
Brihat Samhita 53.118 places the Devas' room in the north-east. It does not give a Durga-specific facing rule. For choosing the shrine's part of the home, use home temple direction.
Contemporary guidance: agreement and disagreement
Dev Aastha and Astroyogi Store both favour a north-east shrine and a raised surface. Their facing advice differs: Dev Aastha's placement table discourages south-facing Durga, while Astroyogi accepts it when the devotee faces north.
Dev Aastha's own takeaway says east or north, but its detailed section says east or west. That section also pairs east/west-facing idols with east/north-facing devotees; these are not consistently opposite directions. We retain the discrepancy instead of rewriting it as one agreed rule. Both pages describe contemporary convention, not an exact Durga-specific classical passage checked for this guide.
Practical note: work out both facings
For a devotee directly before a frontal image, east-facing prayer pairs with a west-facing image; north-facing prayer pairs with a south-facing image. An east-facing image instead pairs with a west-facing devotee. This geometry explains the arrangement, but it cannot reconcile an actual disagreement about which arrangement is preferred.
If you want to change the setup, draw the shelf and your sitting position first. Check that you can reach the prayer book without leaning across the worship area. If the existing arrangement belongs to your family's observance, a website's different preference is not a reason to dismantle it. The prayer-facing guide discusses that separate question.
Setting up a Navratri chowki in a flat
A seasonal chowki needs enough support for the objects actually placed on it. Test that it stays steady on the floor or shelf; keep it out of a doorway and leave a clear route for people walking through the room. Secure a framed picture independently rather than relying on a loose cloth to hold it upright. These are practical checks, not sacred measurements.
When north-east is unavailable, use the clean, accessible prayer corner you can maintain. Do not block an exit, create a precarious shelf or leave too little room to sit merely to reproduce a diagram. Devotion does not become invalid because a small home cannot provide a preferred direction. A photo may use the same stable worship surface; this page does not require a new idol.
Images, lamps and the rest of the observance
This guide does not set an image-size limit, declare a depiction forbidden or decide whether an image requires formal installation. Those questions can depend on an established temple or family tradition. Likewise, the chowki's orientation does not determine the local Ghatasthapana time or a festival date.
If your practice includes a lamp, keep the flame clear of the frame, cloth and decorations, on a stable heat-resistant surface, and never leave it unattended. Avoid using a narrow shelf where the flame can reach a curtain or the image. Read diya placement and the lamp safety and practice guide before arranging one.
Continue to the dedicated pages
The Navratri hub owns checked festival dates and reading choices; the Ghatasthapana guide owns that practice. For a complete devotional reading, use Durga Chalisa or Ambe Gauri Aarti. Keep the inside of the shrine uncluttered enough for your usual practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Durga idol face south?
The two checked contemporary guides disagree: Astroyogi accepts south-facing Durga with north-facing prayer; Dev Aastha discourages it. This guide selects neither as a universal rule. Follow your family or temple tradition.
Which direction should the Navratri chowki be placed in?
Both checked guides prefer the north-east shrine area. That describes location, not necessarily the idol's facing. When unavailable, use a clean, stable and accessible prayer space; direction does not invalidate devotion.
Does this page give the Ghatasthapana time?
No. Placement does not establish a festival date or local clock time. Consult the separately sourced Navratri and Ghatasthapana pages and your local panchang.
