When is Amavasya?

The Amavasya (new moon) tithi that ends every Krishna paksha. Month names follow the North Indian (purnimanta) calendar; the amanta calendar names the same Amavasya after the month it ends.

Puja outline

  1. Bathe early; many families take a holy dip in a river on Amavasya, or add a little Ganga jal to their bath water.
    सुबह जल्दी स्नान करें; कई परिवार अमावस्या पर नदी में स्नान करते हैं, या नहाने के जल में थोड़ा गंगाजल मिलाते हैं।
  2. Remember your ancestors: offer water (tarpan) as your family does, or have shraddha performed by your family priest.

  3. Give food or other help to those in need, a common act of charity on Amavasya.

What is Amavasya?

Amavasya, also spelled Amavas or Amavasai, is the new moon day that ends each Krishna paksha, so it comes once a lunar month. Drik Panchang describes it as a significant day on which many rituals are performed only on the Amavasya tithi. It is especially associated with remembering ancestors: every Amavasya is considered appropriate for shraddha rituals.

Somvati and Shani Amavasya

An Amavasya that falls on a Monday is called Somvati Amavasya, and one on a Saturday is Shani Amavasya. Both are named in the date list. Somvati Amavasya falls on 9 November 2026, and on 8 March, 2 August and 27 December 2027; Shani Amavasya falls on 10 October 2026 and 6 February 2027.

Sarva Pitru Amavasya and Diwali

Two major observances fall on Amavasya. Sarva Pitru (Mahalaya) Amavasya ends Pitru Paksha and is the day for shraddha of ancestors whose tithi is not known; in 2026 it is on 10 October. Diwali Lakshmi Puja falls on Kartika Amavasya and is held on the evening Amavasya prevails, so it can come a day before the Amavasya day in the list, as it does in 2026 (8 and 9 November). Vat Savitri Vrat in North India is on Jyeshtha Amavasya, 4 June 2027.

Why two nearby dates can appear

Different observances on the same Amavasya follow different parts of the day, so they can fall a day apart. Drik Panchang lists Darsha Amavasya separately, and it is sometimes a day before the Amavasya day, as on 8 November 2026. Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2027 is on 29 September, a day before the Ashwina Amavasya day of 30 September. Follow the day your panchang, priest or family gives for the observance you keep.
