ओ३म् जय गंगे माता, श्री जय गंगे माता।
जो नर तुमको ध्याता, जो नर तुमको ध्याता।
मन वांछित फल पाता, ओ३म् जय गंगे माता॥१॥

Om Jai Gange Mata, Shri Jai Gange Mata |
Jo Nar Tumko Dhyata, Jo Nar Tumko Dhyata |
Man Vanchhit Phal Pata, Om Jai Gange Mata || 1 ||

English meaning: Glory to Mother Ganga. The hymn says that whoever meditates on Her receives the fruit their heart desires. The 1942 print's ओ३म् spelling of Om and its श्री (rather than the later मैया) are retained, and its repeated half-lines follow the sung form. The promise of desired fruit is the hymn's devotional expression, not a guarantee of any outcome.

Roman Hindi meaning: Maa Ganga ki jai ho. Aarti kehti hai ki jo manushya unka dhyan karta hai, vah manchaha phal paata hai. 1942 ke chhape paath ka 'Om' (ओ३म्) roop aur 'Shri' (baad ke 'Maiya' ki jagah) yathavat rakhe gaye hain; dohrai gayi ardh-panktiyan gaane ki shaili hain. Manchahe phal ki baat bhaktibhav ki abhivyakti hai, kisi parinam ki guarantee nahin.

चन्द्र सी ज्योति तुम्हारी, जल निर्मल आता।
शरण पड़े जो तेरी, शरण पड़े जो तेरी।
सो नर तर जाता, ओ३म् जय गंगे माता॥२॥

Chandra Si Jyoti Tumhari, Jal Nirmal Aata |
Sharan Pade Jo Teri, Sharan Pade Jo Teri |
So Nar Tar Jata, Om Jai Gange Mata || 2 ||

English meaning: Her radiance is likened to the moon and Her water is called pure. Whoever takes refuge in Her, the hymn says, crosses over, an image of deliverance from worldly bondage. The purity named here is the hymn's devotional description and not a statement about the river's present water quality, drinkability or safety for bathing.

हिंदी अर्थ: उनकी ज्योति चन्द्रमा जैसी कही गई है और उनका जल निर्मल। जो उनकी शरण में आता है, वह तर जाता है; यह संसार-बंधन से उद्धार का रूपक है। यहाँ कही गई निर्मलता आरती का भक्तिपरक वर्णन है, नदी के वर्तमान जल की गुणवत्ता, पीने योग्य होने या स्नान की सुरक्षा के बारे में कथन नहीं।

Roman Hindi meaning: Unki jyoti Chandrama jaisi kahi gayi hai aur unka jal nirmal. Jo unki sharan mein aata hai, vah tar jaata hai; yeh sansar-bandhan se uddhar ka roopak hai. Yahan kahi gayi nirmalta aarti ka bhaktiparak varnan hai, nadi ke vartaman jal ki quality, peene yogya hone ya snan ki suraksha ke baare mein kathan nahin.

भव सागर से तारे, सब जग को ज्ञाता।
कृपा दृष्टि तुम्हारी, कृपा दृष्टि तुम्हारी।
त्रिभुवन सुख दाता, ओ३म् जय गंगे माता॥३॥

Bhav Sagar Se Tare, Sab Jag Ko Gyata |
Kripa Drishti Tumhari, Kripa Drishti Tumhari |
Tribhuvan Sukh Data, Om Jai Gange Mata || 3 ||

English meaning: In this print She carries beings across the ocean of worldly existence and is known to the whole world; Her gracious glance is called the giver of happiness in the three worlds. The common later reading पुत्र सगर के तारे, recalling the deliverance of King Sagara's sons, is a disclosed variant from the 2004 comparison and is not blended into the selected text.

Roman Hindi meaning: Is chhape paath mein ve bhavsagar se paar lagane wali aur saare jagat mein vikhyat kahi gayi hain; unki kripa-drishti teenon lokon ko sukh dene wali hai. Baad ka prachalit paath 'putra Sagar ke tare', jo Raja Sagar ke putron ke uddhar ka smaran karata hai, 2004 ki tulna-prati ka prakat kiya gaya paathantar hai aur chune hue paath mein milaya nahin gaya hai.

Other reading: पुत्र सगर के तारे सब जग की ज्ञाता (Randhir 51 Chalisa Sangrah, 2004)

Retain the print's ocean-of-existence reading; the Sagara-sons wording common in later prints is disclosed in the meaning and not blended.

एक ही बार जो तेरी, शरणागत आता।
यमकी त्रास मिटाकर, यमकी त्रास मिटाकर।
परम गति पाता, ओ३म् जय गंगे माता॥४॥

Ek Hi Baar Jo Teri, Sharanagat Aata |
Yamki Tras Mitakar, Yamki Tras Mitakar |
Param Gati Pata, Om Jai Gange Mata || 4 ||

English meaning: Even one who comes to Her refuge a single time, the hymn says, is freed from the fear of Yama, the lord of death, and reaches the highest state. This is devotional language about liberation within the tradition, not a claim about physical death, health or any medical outcome. The print's शरणागत and joined यमकी are retained.

हिंदी अर्थ: जो एक बार भी उनकी शरण में आता है, वह यम के भय से छूटकर परम गति पाता है। यह परंपरा के भीतर मुक्ति की भक्तिपरक भाषा है, शारीरिक मृत्यु, स्वास्थ्य या किसी चिकित्सीय परिणाम के बारे में दावा नहीं। छपे पाठ के ‘शरणागत’ और जुड़े हुए ‘यमकी’ रूप रखे गए हैं।

Roman Hindi meaning: Jo ek baar bhi unki sharan mein aata hai, vah Yam ke bhay se chhootkar param gati paata hai. Yeh parampara ke bheetar mukti ki bhaktiparak bhasha hai, shaaririk mrityu, swasthya ya kisi medical parinam ke baare mein dava nahin. Chhape paath ke 'sharanagat' aur jude hue 'Yamki' roop rakhe gaye hain.

Published: यमकी त्रास (Shyam Kashi Press Prayag Kumbh Mahatmya, 1942; Prayag composite volume, second scan)

Other reading: यम की त्रास (Randhir 51 Chalisa Sangrah, 2004)

आरती माता तुम्हारी, जो जन नित गाता।
अर्जुन वही सहज में, अर्जुन वही सहज में।
मुक्ति को पाता, ओ३म् जय गंगे माता॥५॥

Aarti Mata Tumhari, Jo Jan Nit Gata |
Arjun Vahi Sahaj Mein, Arjun Vahi Sahaj Mein |
Mukti Ko Pata, Om Jai Gange Mata || 5 ||

English meaning: Whoever sings this aarti of the Mother daily, the closing says, easily attains liberation. The 1942 print reads अर्जुन वही where the common later reading is दास वही, 'that servant'. The print is retained and not emended; read narrowly, the line applies an honoured name to the singer, and its exact sense in this print is not settled. Liberation here is the hymn's devotional hope, not a guaranteed result.

Roman Hindi meaning: Samapan kehta hai ki jo manushya nitya Maa ki yeh aarti gaata hai, vah sahaj hi mukti paata hai. 1942 ke chhape paath mein 'Arjun vahi' hai, jabki baad ka prachalit paath 'daas vahi' hai. Chhapa paath bina sudhar ke rakha gaya hai; sankuchit arth mein pankti gaane wale ko ek sammanit naam deti hai, aur is chhape paath mein iska nishchit arth tay nahin hai. Yahan mukti aarti ki bhaktiparak aasha hai, nishchit parinam nahin.

What is Om Jai Gange Mata Aarti?

Om Jai Gange Mata is the Hindi aarti sung to Mother Ganga at Ganga Dussehra, Ganga Saptami, Kartik Purnima and daily river aartis. This page contains all five stanzas as printed in a January 1942 Prayag Kumbh pilgrim pamphlet from Mathura, transcribed from the page image, with a fresh Roman reading and original Hindi, Roman-Hindi and English meanings. Later prints vary in several words; those differences are disclosed, not blended.

Complete selected edition

All five stanzas follow printed page 13 (scan leaf 16) of the Prayag Kumbh Mahatmya pamphlet of Lala Shyamlal Hiralal, Shyam Kashi Press, Mathura, whose bathing calendar fixes it to January 1942. The aarti begins and ends on that page; the bathing calendar printed beneath it is excluded. The print's ओ३म् spelling, श्री refrain, repeated half-lines and stanza numbers are kept. No author is named in this or any later witness; the hymn is presented as traditional.

Text and comparison note

A 2004 Hardwar print of the same five-stanza aarti was inspected as the comparison witness. It omits the first जय of the opening, reads पुत्र सगर के तारे and जग की ज्ञाता in stanza 3, शरणागति in stanza 4, and मातु and दास वही in stanza 5, and adds a closing refrain line. None of these readings is imported. भव सागर से तारे, शरणागत, यमकी and अर्जुन वही remain as printed in 1942, with their meanings described narrowly. Spacing, consistent commas and the refrain line-break are the only presentation changes.

Reading and claims

This aarti is an optional devotional reading for Ganga Dussehra, Ganga Saptami, Kartik Purnima or a home Ganga puja. Its language about desired fruit, crossing over, freedom from Yama's fear and liberation is the hymn's traditional expression, not a guaranteed outcome. Its praise of pure water is devotional and says nothing about the present river's water quality or safety. No river bathing, immersion, purchase, flame or fixed count is required by this page.
