What is Kartik Purnima?
Kartik Purnima is the full moon of Kartika, which Drik Panchang calls the holiest of the lunar months; Vaishnavas call it Damodara month. Many people bathe in the Ganga or another holy river every morning of Kartika, from Sharad Purnima to Kartik Purnima, and the practice ends on this day.
Five days from Prabodhini Ekadashi
Drik Panchang describes Kartik Purnima as the end of a five-day period that begins on Prabodhini (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi. Tulsi Vivah can be performed on any suitable day in these five days, and many families choose Kartik Purnima. The Bhishma Panchaka fast of the Vaishnava tradition runs over the same days, and Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, the day before the Purnima, is a day when Vishnu and Shiva are worshipped together.
Tripuri Purnima and Dev Deepawali
It is believed that Lord Shiva killed the demon Tripurasura on this day, so it is also called Tripuri or Tripurari Purnima. Drik Panchang describes how the gods celebrated with lights, and how in Varanasi the ghats and temples are lit with lamps for Dev Deepawali, the Diwali of the gods, after a holy dip in the Ganga.
When the festival and the fast differ
The Purnima fast follows its own rule and can fall a day before the full-moon day. In 2027, Drik Panchang and Prokerala give Kartik Purnima as 14 November for New Delhi, while Drik Panchang lists the Kartika Purnima fast on 13 November, and Dev Deepawali in Varanasi is on 13 November in both sources.
