Detailed guides
What is Karwa Chauth?
Karwa Chauth is a fast kept by married women for the long life and well-being of their husbands. Drik Panchang describes it as a strict fast from sunrise until the moon is sighted at night, taken without food or water, during which women worship Lord Shiva and his family, including Lord Ganesha, and break the fast only after sighting the moon and offering it arghya.
The karwa and Karak Chaturthi
The day is also called Karak Chaturthi. The karwa, or karak, is the earthen pot from which water is offered to the moon; Drik Panchang notes that the karwa is central to the puja and is also given as daan. The fast falls on Kartika Krishna Chaturthi in the North Indian calendar, Ashwin in the amanta calendar, but on the same day everywhere.
Karwa Chauth and Sankashti Chaturthi
Karwa Chauth coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi, the monthly Ganesha fast. In Maharashtra and other regions the day is kept as Vakratunda Sankashti Chaturthi. Four days later comes Ahoi Ashtami, a fast kept by mothers for their children, on 1 November in 2026.
Why 29 or 30 October
The fast ends at moonrise, and the day is decided by the Chaturthi at moonrise. For 2026, Drik Panchang and the Government of India's restricted-holiday list give 29 October for New Delhi, while Prokerala gives 30 October; for 2027, Drik Panchang and the government list give 18 October and Prokerala 19 October. Both dates are shown above. Check the moonrise time for your city in a local panchang.
How these dates were checked
The dates are for New Delhi and were checked on 29 September 2026 against Drik Panchang, Prokerala and the Government of India's 2026 and 2027 holiday lists. No clock times are shown on this page; Valkala's Karwa Chauth samagri guide lists Drik Panchang's New Delhi moonrise time.
