Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Vishvanatha Sharma's Vrataraja, 1897 Sanskrit print, Karak Chaturthi katha 1–41 (compiler's Vamana Purana attribution), not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Mandhata ke kathan se prasang khulta hai. Arjun Indrakil parvat gaye hue the aur Draupadi chintit thin. Us samvad mein Shiv ne Karak Chaturthi ka ullekh kiya. Parvati ne uski vidhi aur pracheen katha poochhi. Yeh katha ke bheetar salah hai, aaj har vyakti par lagu upvas ka aadesh nahin.

Shiv ne Shakraprastha naam ke samriddh nagar ka varnan kiya. Vahan Vedasharma naam ke vidvan brahman rehte the; unki patni Lilavati thin. Unke saat putra aur Veeravati naam ki ek putri thi. Katha Veeravati ke saundarya ka paramparik varnan karti hai aur batati hai ki vivah yogya hone par uska vivah ek vidvan brahman se hua. Vah kuchh samay apne pita ke ghar aayi hui thi. Srot ke mukhya path mein pita Vedasharma hain; uska footnote Vedadharma naam ka doosra path bhi batata hai. Yahan mukhya path ka naam rakha gaya hai.

English meaning: The episode opens with Mandhata's report. Arjuna has gone to Mount Indrakila, and Draupadi is anxious. Remembering Krishna, she asks what may be done for her husband's welfare amid obstacles and difficulties. Krishna recalls a vow and says Parvati once asked Maheshvara a similar question. In that dialogue Shiva names Karak Chaturthi; Parvati asks about its observance and earlier story. This advice belongs within the narrative, not a fasting command for everyone today. Shiva describes prosperous Shakraprastha. The learned Brahmin Vedasharma lives there with his wife Lilavati. They have seven sons and a daughter, Veeravati. After a conventional description of her beauty, the story says she marries a learned Brahmin and later spends some time at her father's house. The main text calls her father Vedasharma; its footnote records Vedadharma as an alternative. This retelling retains the main-text name.

Roman Hindi meaning: Krishna Draupadi ko Shiv-Parvati samvad mein kahi Karak Chaturthi ki katha sunate hain; Veeravati saat bhaiyon ki behen hai.

Veeravati ne us prakash ko chandrama maan liya, arghya diya aur bhojan kiya. Is chayanit path mein chhalni ka drishya nahin hai. Katha iske baad uske pati ki mrityu batati hai aur use vrat ke beech bhojan karne se jodti hai. Yeh katha ka dharmik karan-sambandh hai, vastavik shok ka karan ya kisi patni ka dosh nahin.

Shok mein ek varsh beeta. Padhne ya prarthana karne ke liye bhojan-pani chhodna aavashyak nahin.

English meaning: On Kartika Krishna Chaturthi Veeravati observes the vow. The account's evening worship describes an image of Gauri beneath a banyan, with Shiva, Ganesha and the six-faced deity. Incense, flowers and a prayer for marital good fortune are followed by offerings and gifts of grain-filled pots. The women await the moon. These are the old account's materials and prayers, not a compulsory shopping or worship list for this reader. Overcome by hunger, Veeravati falls down and weeps. Her brothers lift her and wipe her face with cool water. Distressed by her suffering, they devise a trick: light a torch-like flame in the banyan tree and announce that the moon has risen. She mistakes it for the moon, offers arghya and eats. This selected text has no sieve scene. The narrative then reports her husband's death and connects it with eating during the vow. That is the story's religious causal explanation, not a cause of real bereavement or a spouse's fault. A year passes in grief. Remembering Shiva, Veeravati observes the vow again. The elapsed year does not instruct readers to remain without food or water for an entire year. Neither reading nor prayer requires giving up food or water.

Roman Hindi meaning: Bhai mashal ko chandrama batate hain; Veeravati bhojan karti hai aur katha shok batati hai. Vastavik parivar ki hani ko is kathanak se dosh nahin diya ja sakta.

Katha mein Indrani svarg se divya sahchari striyon ke saath vahan aati hain; manushya striyan bhi vrat mein sammilit hain. Veeravati unka svagat aur poojan karti hai tatha vinaypoorvak apni baat kehti hai. Vah poochhti hai ki itni bhakti ke baad bhi yeh vipatti kyon aayi aur apne pati ko phir jeevit karne ki prarthana karti hai.

Indrani kehti hain ki pita ke ghar pehle kiye vrat mein asli chandroday se pehle arghya aur bhojan hua tha; isliye vah prasang adhoora raha. Ve ab sahi kram se Karak vrat karne ko kehti hain aur pati ke jee uthne ka aashvasan deti hain. Krishna ke kathan mein Veeravati ne unki baat sunkar phir vrat kiya. Indrani prasann huin aur uske pati par jal chhidka.

English meaning: Indrani descends with celestial women, while human women also participate in the observance. Veeravati welcomes and worships her, then respectfully asks why such calamity followed her devotion. She prays for her husband to be restored to life. Indrani replies that, during the earlier observance at her father's house, arghya and food preceded actual moonrise and the rite was therefore incomplete. She tells Veeravati to repeat the Karak vow in its proper sequence and promises her husband's revival. In Krishna's narration Veeravati follows this counsel. Pleased, Indrani sprinkles water on her husband. The story describes him rising alive and goes on to speak of health, long life, wealth and sons, followed by Veeravati's continuing observance. This is Indrani's answer within the plot and the story's supernatural conclusion. It does not make fasting a treatment, a way to reverse death or a guarantee of children, wealth or longevity. Illness and family loss must not be treated as punishment for a mistaken offering or for eating and drinking.

Roman Hindi meaning: Katha Indrani ke uttar aur jal se punarjeevan ko chamatkar ke roop mein batati hai, upchar ya vastavik phal ki guarantee ke roop mein nahin.

Antim pad santan, pautra aur sampannata jaise paramparik aashirvad kehta hai.

Iske baad Karak naam ki Chaturthi ke samapan-vakya mein Vamana Purana ka naam aata hai. Yahin is chayanit katha ka ant hai; agli Gauri Chaturthi ki samagri ismein nahin jodi gayi hai. Katha mein rajya ki vapasi aur parivar-sambandhi phal dharmik kathan hain, aitihasik praman ya aadhunik laabh ka vaada nahin. Doodh, patra aur vastra ki bhent bhi is pathak ki anivarya shart nahin hai. Is punarkathan ka uddeshya poora chayanit prasang padhna hai, kisi ki sthiti, vivah ya santan ke aadhar par puja ka adhikar tay karna nahin.

English meaning: At the close Suta says that Draupadi followed Krishna's counsel and performed the vow; the narrative credits it with the Pandavas' recovery of their incomparable kingdom. Subsequent verses praise women's marital good fortune and children's welfare. They mention a milk-filled pot, an offering prayer and a gift with clothing. The final verse gives conventional blessings of children, grandchildren and prosperity. The colophon then names the Vamana Purana and closes the Chaturthi called Karak. This is the end of the selected account; the following Gauri Chaturthi material is not appended. Restoration of a kingdom and family benefits are religious narrative statements, not historical proof or promises of modern gain. Gifts of milk, a vessel or clothing are not conditions for using this reader. The retelling offers the whole selected episode without deciding anyone's right to pray by marital status or parenthood.

Roman Hindi meaning: Soot Draupadi ke vrat aur rajya lautne ki baat kehte hain; bhent aur paramparik aashirvad ke baad chayanit katha samapt hoti hai.

What is Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha — Veeravati Retelling?

Read the complete selected Karwa Chauth account of Veeravati: her brothers' false moon, her grief, Indrani's intervention and the return to Draupadi's story. Four original prose parts cover Vrataraja's Karak Chaturthi katha 1–41 in Hindi, Roman-Hindi and English. This is a retelling of one inspected edition, not a Sanskrit transcription, every regional legend or a fasting manual.

The complete selected account

The 1897 Sanskrit Vrataraja controls this edition. The selected katha begins with Mandhata's report of Draupadi's concern and ends after numbered verse 41 and the Karak Chaturthi colophon. The compiler labels it Vamana Purana; this is not a claim that a particular chapter in a separately verified Purana edition was checked. Preliminary puja prose and the following Gauri Chaturthi section are excluded.

One telling, not a blended legend

This witness names seven brothers, their sister Veeravati and Indrani. A torch in a banyan tree is mistaken for moonrise. A sieve, the Karva-and-crocodile story, a needle-covered body and visits from successive Chauth goddesses are not added from other tellings. The father's main-text name Vedasharma is retained; the print notes Vedadharma as an alternative.

Story, fasting and loss

The source links premature eating with bereavement and describes miraculous restoration, longevity, wealth and descendants. These are features of its religious narrative, not causes of real bereavement, blame for a grieving spouse or guarantees. An elapsed year is not prescribed as a year-long fast. Reading requires neither fasting nor marital status, a purchase or a formal ritual.
