Saraswati Idol Direction: Home Shrine, Photo and Study Shelf
Find a respectful place for a Saraswati image, separate modern direction advice from scripture, and adapt a study shelf without promising exam results.
झटपट सार · Hindi and Hinglish summary

Brihat Samhita 53.118 dev-griha ka sthan batati hai, study desk ya exam result ka niyam nahin. Available jagah mein samman se arrangement karein; disha se bhakti amaanya nahin hoti.
A Saraswati image can have a dedicated place in your home shrine or on a clean, secure study shelf. The two contemporary sources checked here favour north-east placement, but their alternative directions differ. Use your established worship custom and the space you can maintain. Neither the shelf's direction nor the image is a substitute for study, teaching or rest.
Classical statement: what the cited verse covers
Brihat Samhita 53.118 places the Devas' room in the north-east. It gives no Saraswati study-desk or examination rule. The broader home temple guide discusses shrine location.
Contemporary guidance: shared location, different alternatives
Vastu Mandir prefers north-east, with east or north as alternatives. Siddhhi Arts also prefers north-east but names east or west as alternatives and separately recommends an east-facing idol. That facing recommendation is not shared evidence for a universal rule. Both are retailers offering contemporary placement advice.
Vastu Mandir explicitly allows a study table that is maintained respectfully. This is useful household guidance, not a verse prescribing the layout of every student's desk. We do not infer an improvement in memory, marks or learning from either publisher's placement claims.
Practical note: corner, wall and facing are different
The north-east corner describes where an object sits. Its front can still face another direction. A photograph hung flat on the east wall normally faces west into the room. If a source instead asks for an east-facing image, a flat frame on a west wall would meet that description. Do not confuse the wall's name with the way the picture looks.
Before rearranging, consider whether this is a place for prayer, a display above a desk, or both. A student can sit at an angle to a picture; that does not make the picture itself face the student's study direction. For prayer directly before a frontal image, your facing and its facing are opposite. Read prayer-facing guidance for that distinct question.
A study shelf that is easy to use
Reserve enough work surface for books and writing. Keep the image on a stable shelf or secured stand where it will not be knocked over while a notebook is opened. Avoid a heavy frame balanced on a pile of books or an idol resting on an unstable monitor. Leave space to dust behind it and reach any nearby switches without moving the image every time.
A small framed picture may fit a shared desk more comfortably than a large arrangement. This is a space choice, not a lower grade of devotion. Check that the frame does not cover the reading light or force an uncomfortable sitting position. The practical aim is a respectful place that remains usable for both reading and prayer.
When the preferred corner is unavailable
Keep the existing family shrine or choose a clean shelf that can be secured. In a rented or shared room, you may be unable to change the furniture or fix a new wall shelf. A stable stand can be a practical fallback if it leaves the desk clear. Devotion does not become invalid because the available place has a different compass direction.
Ask your family, temple or teacher if the image belongs to a tradition with particular care requirements. This page does not prescribe installation, a daily offering schedule, a special material or a fixed number of repetitions. Its scope is the image's placement, not a general study-room plan.
Prayer and the festival have their own pages
Read the complete Saraswati remembrance shloka or Saraswati Chalisa if you want a devotional text. The Vasant Panchami hub owns festival dates and its optional prayer outline. For an existing household aarti practice, see the aarti guide rather than deriving a ritual from a placement article.
For the wider arrangement, return to puja-room setup or compare the separate Durga placement guide. Keep any examination hopes separate from claims about the compass direction of a picture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which direction should a Saraswati idol be placed in?
The two checked contemporary guides both prefer a north-east location. Their alternatives differ: Vastu Mandir gives east or north, Siddhhi Arts east or west. Follow your established practice and the safe space available.
Must a Saraswati idol face east?
Siddhhi Arts recommends that facing, but it is not a shared rule established by the two checked sources. The cited classical verse concerns shrine location, not Saraswati's facing.
Can a Saraswati photo be kept on a study table?
A dedicated, stable place can work if books and writing still have room. Secure the frame and keep it easy to clean. This practical arrangement does not promise examination results.
