Balcony, window and flat

1. Pick the balcony or window facing east, north or north-east that gets the most direct sunlight. Tulsi generally needs several hours of direct sun a day.
2. Use a raised pot or a small Tulsi stand rather than keeping the pot on the floor. Many families treat this as a mark of respect, and it helps drainage.
3. If your only sunny balcony faces south, many families keep Tulsi there rather than letting it die in a dark north corner. A living plant that is cared for is the point.
4. Water when the topsoil is dry. Tulsi dislikes both drying out and waterlogging.

Daily care as devotion

In many households, watering Tulsi in the morning and lighting a lamp near her in the evening, especially through the month of Kartik, is itself the devotion. Some families also avoid plucking leaves on particular days, such as Sundays or Ekadashi. Follow your own family's practice here. Tulsi in worship

Tulsi leaves are offered in Vishnu and Krishna worship, and Tulsi Vivah marks her ceremonial marriage to Vishnu in Kartik.
