What is Jake Priya Na Ram Vaidehi?
Jake Priya Na Ram Vaidehi is pad 174 of Goswami Tulsidas’s Vinaya Patrika: four couplets in Braj saying that anyone to whom Rama and Sita are not dear should be set aside, however close, and giving examples from the Puranas of devotees who did so. This page gives the pad in the spelling of the 1923 Tulsi-Granthavali, with every word checked against a 1926 printing.
What this pad is
Pad 174 states Tulsidas’s conviction that love for Rama is the measure of every relationship. He cites Prahlada, Vibhishana, Bharata, Bali and the women of Braj, each of whom set aside a father, brother, mother, guru or husband and was blessed for it. These are the poet’s statements about devotion as he saw it, not advice to leave one’s family.
A story told about this pad
A popular story says Tulsidas wrote this pad in reply to a letter from Meera. That story is legend; it is not supported by the works themselves, and the dates usually given for the two poets make a correspondence unlikely.
Source and spelling
The spelling follows the 1923 Kashi Nagari Pracharini Sabha printing, and every word is checked against the 1926 Naval Kishore Press printing. Two 1923 forms that break the pad’s own rhyme are corrected, and the 1926 print confirms both corrections: सनेही (to rhyme with बैदेही) and हमारो (to rhyme with प्यारो). In two places the 1923 print has words found only in that edition—मुदमंगलकारी and पुँजी—and this page follows the 1926 print and most editions there: जग मंगलकारी and पूज्य.
