When is Masik Shivratri?

The Chaturdashi (fourteenth) tithi of every Krishna paksha, observed on the day Chaturdashi prevails at midnight (Nishita kaal).

Puja outline

  1. Decide before the day how you will keep the fast, and make it suit your health.

  2. Offer water to a Shivling or picture of Shiva during the day, with bilva leaves if you have them, and light a diya.

  3. Keep the main puja for the night; many devotees stay awake and worship Shiva around midnight (Nishita kaal).

  4. Read one complete Shiva text, such as Shiv Chalisa or Lingashtakam, attentively.

  5. Chant Om Namah Shivaya on a mala if that belongs to your practice.

What is Masik Shivratri?

Every month, the Chaturdashi tithi of the Krishna paksha is Masik Shivratri, the monthly night of Shiva. Drik Panchang describes Shivratri as the convergence of Shiva and Shakti, and notes that Shivratri fasting is referred to in the Puranas. Devotees keep a one-day fast and worship the Shivling, with the main puja at night.

Masik Shivratri and Maha Shivratri

Maha Shivratri is the Masik Shivratri of Phalguna in the North Indian (purnimanta) calendar, which the amanta calendar calls Magha. Drik Panchang explains that only the month's name differs: both calendars keep every Shivratri, including Maha Shivratri, on the same day. In 2027 Maha Shivratri falls on 6 March. The Shivratri of Shravana, on 31 July 2027, is known in North India as Sawan Shivratri.

Starting the monthly vrat

Drik Panchang says devotees who want to keep the monthly Shivratri vrat can begin on Maha Shivratri and continue it for a year. It also notes that a Masik Shivratri falling on a Tuesday is considered especially auspicious; in 2027 that happens on 5 January, 4 May and 28 September. These are customs, not requirements: begin when you can and keep the fast in a way that suits your health.

The midnight puja

Shivratri puja is traditionally done at midnight, in the period called Nishita kaal, and the date is decided by the tithi at that time. Nishita kaal depends on your location, so take its time from a panchang set to your city. No clock times are shown on this page.
