What to read

Puja outline

  1. Choose a safe form of observance before the day. Do not attempt a waterless fast if it conflicts with your health needs or medical advice.
  2. Bathe, clean the prayer space and place an image of Vishnu or Krishna with a safely watched diya.
  3. Offer flowers or tulsi if available, without treating any material as compulsory.
  4. Read one complete Vishnu text and hear the Bhima–Vyasa exchange as a sacred account, not as pressure to ignore your body's needs.
  5. Offer drinking water, food or another practical gift to someone who needs it, without treating charity as a transaction for a promised result.
  6. If you fast, follow the parana window for your location and tradition, and end the fast immediately if you become unwell.

What is Nirjala Ekadashi?

Nirjala Ekadashi is Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi. Its name refers to an observance without water. Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda chapter 51, presents it through a dialogue involving Yudhishthira, Krishna, Vyasa and Bhima; the closing line links Bhima with the name Pandava Dwadashi.

The Bhima–Vyasa account

Bhima says that Yudhishthira, Kunti, Draupadi and his brothers observe Ekadashi, but that his own hunger is difficult to bear. When he asks for one observance, Vyasa describes the Jyeshtha bright-fortnight Ekadashi without food or water and assigns it the sacred merit of the year's Ekadashis. The chapter ends by saying Bhima observed it. This is an original bounded summary, not a copied translation or a guaranteed outcome.

Waterless fasting is optional here

The chapter's waterless rule is preserved as part of the source, but Valkala does not prescribe it. Going without fluid can cause dehydration, with greater risk in hot conditions and for some people. If you are unwell, pregnant, older, taking medication, have a health condition or have any doubt, follow medical advice and use water, food or a no-fast observance. Stop and drink if you feel unwell; devotion is not measured by dehydration.

A safer household observance

Worship Vishnu, read a complete prayer, practise restraint and give drinking water or food where useful. If fasting is safe for you, household forms range from avoiding grains to fruit or simple food. The chapter's merit, heaven and liberation claims belong to its sacred framework, not to a health promise or a judgement of people who do not fast.

Why is it called Nirjala or Bhimaseni Ekadashi?

Nirjala means without water. Padma Purana chapter 51 tells how Bhima, finding repeated fasting difficult, asks Vyasa for one observance and is given the Jyeshtha Shukla waterless fast; devotional tradition therefore also calls it Bhimaseni or Pandava Ekadashi.

What should I do if I feel unwell while fasting?

Stop the fast, drink water and seek appropriate medical help if needed. A sacred narrative should not be used to override symptoms, medication or professional advice.
