Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Bhagavata Purana 10.3.1–53, Sanskrit Wikisource revision 210881, not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Shukdev janm ke samay ka varnan karte hain. Dishayen shaant thin, aakash nirmal tha, nagar aur gram mangalbhav se bhare the. Nadi aur sarovar ka jal svachchh, van phoolon aur pakshiyon ki dhvani se jeevant tatha hava sugandhit thi. Agniyan shaant bhav se jalin aur sajjanon ke man prasann hue. Katha divya dhol, gayak, stuti, nritya aur phoolon ki varsha ka drishya deti hai. Janm-nakshatra ka ullekh hai, par is pankti mein uska naam nahin diya gaya hai; yeh kisi vartaman varsh ka panchang nahin hai.

Andheri madhyaratri mein Devaki ke yahan Vishnu aise prakat hue jaise poorva disha mein poorn chandrama. Vasudev ne kamal jaise netron aur chaar bhujaon vala adbhut balak dekha. Uske divya aayudh, Shrivatsa-chihn, Kaustubh, peet vastra, megh jaisa roop, mukut, kundal aur anya aabhooshan the. Aanand aur vismay se Vasudev ne man mein brahmanon ko das hazar gayen dene ka sankalp kiya. Yeh man ka daan-sankalp hai, karagar se bahar nikalkar usi samay daan karne ka drishya nahin. Unhone us prakashman balak ko Param Purush samajhkar haath jodkar stuti ki. Divya vatavaran aur roop dharmik katha ke chitra hain, aitihasik praman ya janmotsav ke anivarya aayojan nahin.

English meaning: Shuka describes the time of birth: peaceful directions, a clear sky and auspicious towns and villages. Rivers and ponds are clear, forests alive with flowers and birds, and the breeze fragrant. Fires burn peacefully and good people's minds rejoice. The account depicts celestial drums, singers, praise, dance and showers of flowers. A birth-star setting is mentioned, but this line does not name the star; it is not a calendar for a current year. At dark midnight Vishnu appears to Devaki like the full moon in the east. Vasudeva sees a wondrous lotus-eyed child with four arms, divine weapons, the Shrivatsa mark, Kaustubha jewel, yellow clothes, a cloud-like appearance, crown, earrings and other ornaments. In joy and amazement he mentally resolves to give ten thousand cows to Brahmins. This is a mental gift, not a scene of leaving captivity to distribute cows immediately. Recognizing the luminous child as the supreme person, he offers praise with folded hands. The divine setting and form are religious imagery, not historical proof or obligatory birthday festivities.

Roman Hindi meaning: Janm ke mangalbhav aur divya balak ko dekhkar Vasudev man mein daan ka sankalp karte hain aur stuti karte hain.

Vasudev kehte hain ki balak prakriti se pare Param Purush aur sab buddhiyon ka sakshi hai. Ve srishti aur usmein Ishvar ki upasthiti par vichar karte hain: tattva milkar shareer ka roop banate hain, par mool satta un roopon mein aane se badal nahin jati. Unke anusaar bheetar-bahar ka bhed Paramatma ko seemit nahin karta; jo keval dikhte gunon ko alag satya maanta hai, vah poora sambandh nahin samajhta. Janm, palan aur ant Ishvar ke aashray mein kahe jate hain, bhale vah svayam parivartan aur gunon se pare ho. Safed, laal aur kale roopon ko ve palan, srijan aur sanhar se jodte hain.

Vasudev balak ke aagaman ko lok-raksha aur atyachar rokne se jodte hain. Phir Kamsa ka bhay batate hain: usne pehle bachchon ko maara hai aur is janm ki soochna milne par hathiyar lekar aa sakta hai. Devaki bhi bhaybheet hokar prarthana karti hain. Ve balak ko avyakt Brahm, Vishnu aur bheetar prakash dene vala kehti hain; unke stavan mein pralaya ke baad shesh rehne vali satta aur samay par Ishvar ka adhikar aata hai.

English meaning: Vasudeva calls the child the supreme person beyond nature and witness of every mind. He reflects on creation and divine presence: elements combine into embodied forms, but their underlying reality is not changed by appearing in them. In his account, inside and outside do not limit the supreme self; treating visible qualities as an isolated reality misses their relationship. Birth, preservation and dissolution are spoken of in dependence on the divine, though the divine itself transcends qualities and change. White, red and black forms are linked with preservation, creation and dissolution. He connects the child's coming with protecting the world and restraining oppression, then voices concern about Kamsa: earlier children have been killed, and news of this birth may bring him armed. Devaki also prays in fear. She calls the child unmanifest Brahman, Vishnu and inner light; her praise describes what remains after dissolution and divine authority over time. Her language about refuge removing death's fear is theology, not a promise of physical immunity from death. Devaki asks protection from Kamsa and requests that the supernatural four-armed, weapon-bearing form not remain visible to ordinary eyes. She does not want Kamsa to learn of the birth. Her prayer also marvels that the one containing the whole universe has entered her womb. These speeches combine theology with parental anxiety, not medical, safety or fertility guarantees for real families.

Roman Hindi meaning: Vasudev ka stavan srishti aur Paramatma ka sambandh batata hai; Devaki Kamsa se bhay ke beech alaukik roop chhipane ki prarthana karti hain.

Bhagavan Devaki se kehte hain ki pehle sarg mein ve Prishni thin aur Vasudev Sutapa Prajapati the. Brahma ke nirdesh ke baad donon ne indriyon ko sanyam mein rakhkar kathor tap kiya. Katha varsha, hava, garmi aur sheet sehna, shvas rokna tatha patton aur vayu par nirvah jaise atyant kathin prasang kehti hai; barah hazar divya varshon ka varnan aata hai.

Vaisa doosra koi na milne par Bhagavan svayam unke putra Prishnigarbha hue. Phir Aditi aur Kashyap ke yahan Upendra ke roop mein aaye, jinhein Vamana bhi kaha gaya. Ab teesre janm mein ve phir unhin ke putra hain.

Unhone kaha ki yeh divya roop pehle janmon ka smaran karane ke liye dikhaya gaya; keval samanya shishu-roop se vah pehchan na hoti. Putra-bhav aur Brahm-bhav se prempoorvak smaran karne par unki param gati ka dharmik aashvasan diya gaya. Yeh katha ka poorvajanm aur mukti sambandhi kathan hai, kisi dampati ki vastavik pehchan, santan pane ka upay ya kisi ki aadhyatmik sthiti ka nirnay nahin.

English meaning: The divine child tells Devaki that in an earlier creation she was Prishni and Vasudeva was the progenitor Sutapa. Following Brahma's instruction they restrained their senses and undertook severe penance. The account describes exposure to rain, wind, heat and cold, breath retention and subsistence on leaves and air over twelve thousand divine years. These are supernatural duration and austerity imagery, not instructions to hold one's breath, starve or endure dangerous weather. Pleased with their devotion, he offered a boon. They asked for a son like him rather than liberation, a desire the narrative associates with divine maya. After receiving the boon they resumed household life. Finding no other equal, he became their son Prishnigarbha. Later he was born to Aditi and Kashyapa as Upendra, also called Vamana. This is the third birth in which he again becomes their son. He explains that the divine form was shown to recall those earlier births; an ordinary infant form would not have prompted that recognition. Loving contemplation of him as son and Brahman is accompanied by a religious assurance of attaining his supreme destination. This is the story's language of past lives and liberation, not proof of a real couple's identity, a fertility method or judgment of anyone's spiritual standing.

Roman Hindi meaning: Bhagavan teen janmon ka prasang batate hain; kathin tap, putra ka var aur param gati katha ki dharmik bhasha hain.

Shukdev kehte hain ki yeh batakar Bhagavan shaant hue aur mata-pita ke dekhte hue samanya shishu jaise ho gaye. Usi samay Nand ki patni ke yahan Yogamaya ka janm hua. Katha mein uske prabhav se pehredar aur nagarvasi so rahe the. Bhari kapat aur lohe ke bandhanon vale dvar Vasudev ke aate hi apne aap khul gaye.

Vasudev Nand ke Vraj pahunche, jahan log so rahe the. Unhone putra ko Yashoda ke bistar par rakha, vahan ki kanya ko liya aur vapas aaye. Is chayanit adhyay mein jal ka balak ke charan chhoone ya kisi anya atirikt drishya ka vistar nahin hai.

Vasudev ne kanya ko Devaki ke bistar par rakha, apne pairon mein lohe ke bandhan phir lagaye aur pehle ki tarah vahin rahe. Ant mein bataya gaya ki thakan aur neend ke karan Yashoda janm hone ko janti thin, lekin shishu ka ling nahin jaan payin. Yahin Krishna-janm ka poora chayanit adhyay samapt hota hai. Agle adhyay ka Kamsa aur Devi ka prasang is path mein nahin joda gaya hai. Dvar, Shesh aur nadi ke chamatkar dharmik katha hain; bachche ko baadh ya nadi mein lekar jana kabhi is punarkathan ka nirdesh nahin hai.

English meaning: Shuka says the divine child falls silent and becomes like an ordinary infant before his parents' eyes. Inspired, Vasudeva prepares to carry him out of the birth chamber. At the same time Yogamaya is born to Nanda's wife. In the narrative her influence puts guards and townspeople to sleep. The heavy doors, secured with iron bolts and chains, open by themselves as Vasudeva approaches. Rain falls and Shesha shelters them with his hoods. The Yamuna is deep, swift, foaming and full of whirlpools, yet grants a path, compared with the ocean making way for the lord of Shri. Vasudeva reaches Nanda's settlement, where the people sleep. He places his son on Yashoda's bed, takes the girl born there and returns. This selected chapter does not elaborate a scene of water touching the infant's feet or other additional episodes. He lays the girl beside Devaki, refastens the iron restraints on his feet and remains as before. The final verse explains that, exhausted and asleep, Yashoda knows a birth has occurred but does not know the child's sex. This completes the entire selected Krishna-birth chapter. The following chapter's Kamsa and goddess episode is not appended. The doors, Shesha and river miracles belong to religious narrative; carrying a child into floodwater or a river is never an instruction from this retelling.

Roman Hindi meaning: Divya katha mein Vasudev bachche ko Nand ke ghar rakhkar kanya sahit lautte hain; Yashoda ki antim anishchitata shishu ke ling ke bare mein hai.

What is Krishna Janma Katha — Complete Birth-Chapter Retelling?

Read the complete selected Krishna birth chapter, Bhagavata Purana 10.3.1–53, in four original Hindi prose parts with Roman-Hindi and English. The account includes the divine appearance, Vasudeva and Devaki's prayers, the recollection of earlier births, and the journey and child exchange at Nanda's home. It is a condensed retelling of the whole chapter, not a Sanskrit transcription, every childhood story or a Janmashtami ritual manual.

A complete chapter with an explicit boundary

The selected electronic chapter contains 53 numbered verse positions. The preceding captivity history and the following Kamsa–Yogamaya confrontation are outside this reader, not silently condensed into invented extra scenes. The entire selected chapter is covered, including its theological speeches; the account does not stop at the birth or river crossing.

Original retelling and electronic source

Sanskrit Wikisource revision 210881 controls the account. GRETIL was checked for sequence and wording differences only; its noncommercial Roman text is not reused. Hindi prose and full Roman-Hindi/English counterparts are original Valkala adaptations, distributed under CC BY-SA 4.0 with source attribution. Exact electronic verse citations are not scan-page claims.

Narrative, not timing or treatment

Midnight, a birth-star setting, divine appearance, past lives, liberation and the river miracle belong to the religious narrative. They do not calculate an annual festival date or puja time, certify a historical birthday, promise children or immunity from death, or instruct dangerous austerity, breath retention or river entry. Reading and prayer require no fasting, vigil or purchase.

Edition differences are not silently repaired

The comparison differs in several praise/description words, including Devaki's smiling versus astonished epithet at 10.3.23 and the weapon compound at 10.3.9. This prose retelling uses secure events and attributes fear to the mother without reconstructing Sanskrit. Yashoda's final uncertainty concerns the child's sex, not whether a birth occurred.

The mental-gift interpretation

At 10.3.11 the Sanskrit mentions a gift of ten thousand cows without literally using the word mental. Vasudeva's mental resolve is the context-based interpretation checked against the published VedaBase commentary on that verse. That copyrighted commentary is consulted for this point only; none of its modern translation or prose is reproduced, and it does not control the chapter or supply reusable text.
