Katha 10.24.1–38
Ve nagarvasi nahin, van aur parvat ke aashrit hain.
Alag-alag bhojan bane, srot ki reeti ke anusaar agni-karma aur daan hon, anya logon tatha pashuon ko bhi bhojan mile, gayon ko chara diya jaye aur parvat ko bhog arpit ho. Log bhojan karke susajjit hon aur parikrama karein. Aashirvad, arpan aur gayon ko aage karke parikrama hui; gopiyan gadiyon mein baithkar Krishna ke karyon ka gayan karne lagin. Katha mein Krishna ne vishal parvat-roop prakat karke bhog sweekar kiya aur apne doosre roop se Vrajvasiyon ke saath us roop ko pranam kiya. Unhone upeksha karne valon ke liye parvat ke dand ka ullekh bhi kiya. Utsav ke baad log Krishna ke saath Vraj laute. Samajik padkram, stri-sambandhi upma, daan aur dand katha ki pracheen bhasha hain, aaj ke pathak ke liye niyam ya dhamki nahin.
English meaning: Shuka tells Parikshit that Krishna, living in Vraja with Balarama, sees the cowherds preparing Indra's rite. Krishna politely asks Nanda and the elders whom the festival honours, what it accomplishes and how it is performed. He asks that a good undertaking be understood rather than concealed from one's own people. Nanda explains that Indra supplies the rain sustaining crops, fodder and livelihoods; people worship him with materials produced through that rain and follow inherited custom. He warns against abandoning tradition through desire, greed, fear or hostility. Krishna responds with an argument about action and nature. Beings acquire births, pleasures, suffering and changing conditions through karma; people should honour the work sustaining them. He criticises abandoning one's livelihood through a harsh gendered analogy, then discusses ancient varna-based occupations and agriculture, trade, cattle keeping and lending. The cowherds live by cattle keeping. He describes the three gunas, change in nature and rainfall, questioning Indra's special intervention. Their home is the forest and hills, not urban settlements. These arguments belong to the narrative, not modern meteorology or a moral diagnosis of another person's hardship. Krishna proposes using the prepared materials for a celebration honouring cattle, Brahmins and the hill. Different foods should be prepared; the source describes fire rites and gifts, food for others and animals, fodder for cattle, offerings to the hill, and a procession after the participants eat and dress. He asks Nanda to accept the proposal if it seems suitable. Nanda and the cowherds agree. Blessings and offerings accompany circumambulation with cattle at the front; the women ride in carts singing Krishna's deeds. In the story Krishna manifests a great mountain-form to receive the offerings, while his other form bows with the community. He also voices a warning about the hill punishing neglect. The celebration ends with the return to Vraja. Its social hierarchy, gendered analogy, gifts and punishment language are ancient narrative features, not present-day duties or threats.
