What to read

Puja outline

  1. Decide before the day how you will keep the fast, and make it suit your health. Many devotees fast through the day and eat after the evening puja.
  2. Bathe and prepare the puja place before sunset.
  3. In the evening, after sunset, offer water to a Shivling or picture of Shiva, with bilva leaves if you have them, and light a diya.
  4. Read or listen to the Pradosh vrat katha for that weekday if your family does, and read one complete Shiva text, such as Shiv Chalisa.
  5. Chant Om Namah Shivaya or the Mahamrityunjaya mantra on a mala if that belongs to your practice.
  6. Close with Om Jai Shiv Omkara or your family's aarti.

What is Pradosh Vrat?

Pradosh Vrat, called Pradosham in South India, is a fast for Lord Shiva on the Trayodashi tithi of both the Shukla and Krishna paksha, so it comes about twice a month. Drik Panchang notes that some people keep only the Shukla or only the Krishna Pradosh. The puja belongs to Pradosh kaal, the time after sunset when Trayodashi and the evening overlap.

Soma, Bhauma and Shani Pradosh

A Pradosh is named after its weekday. On a Monday it is Soma Pradosh, on a Tuesday Bhauma Pradosh and on a Saturday Shani Pradosh; other days give Ravi, Budha, Guru and Shukra Pradosh. Each weekday has its own vrat katha, and Drik Panchang says reading or listening to it completes the fast. The date list shows the weekday name and paksha for every date.

Why the date depends on your city

The Pradosh fast is kept on the day Trayodashi prevails after sunset, and sunset differs from city to city. Drik Panchang points out that the fasting day can therefore differ between two cities, even in the same state, and can fall on Dwadashi, the day before Trayodashi. The dates on this page are for New Delhi. If you live elsewhere, check a panchang set to your city.

When Pradosh follows Ekadashi

Pradosh usually comes two days after Ekadashi, but sometimes on the very next day. For people who keep both, Drik Panchang suggests a symbolic Ekadashi parana with water only, then continuing into the Pradosh fast. Choose what is safe for you; anyone unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication should take advice before fasting on consecutive days.

How these dates were checked

Every date on this page is for New Delhi and was checked on 29 September 2026 against the Drik Panchang and AstroSage Pradosh lists; each listed date appears on the same day in both. No clock times are shown. Check your local panchang for the Pradosh puja window.

Frequently asked questions

How many Pradosh Vrats are there in 2027?

Twenty-five Pradosh Vrat days fall between 1 January and 31 December 2027 for New Delhi: one on each Shukla and Krishna Trayodashi. The calendar year holds 25 of them because the fortnights do not line up with January and December.

What is Soma Pradosh or Shani Pradosh?

A Pradosh that falls on a Monday is called Soma Pradosh and one on a Saturday is Shani Pradosh. A Tuesday Pradosh is Bhauma Pradosh. The name comes from the weekday; the vrat is the same.

What time is the Pradosh puja done?

In Pradosh kaal, the period after sunset while Trayodashi prevails. The exact window depends on your city's sunset, so take it from a panchang set to your location.

Can Pradosh Vrat fall on Dwadashi?

Yes. If Trayodashi begins before sunset on the day that is still Dwadashi at sunrise, the Pradosh fast is kept on that day, because it is the evening tithi that counts.

What should I read on Pradosh?

Shiv Chalisa, Om Jai Shiv Omkara, the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, Lingashtakam, Rudrashtakam and Shiva Mahimna Stotram are complete options on Valkala, along with the Pradosh vrat katha for the weekday if your family reads it. Reading one text attentively is enough.
