Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Vrataraja, 1897 Khemraj Sanskrit print, Anant-vrat katha 1–133, not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Soot Rajasuya yagya ki bhoomika sunate hain. Krishna, Bheem aur Arjun ke saath Yudhishthir ka yagya aur sabha banti hai. Anek atithi aate hain. Duryodhan sabha mein jal aur chamakte farsh ka bhed nahin pehchante; girne par hansi hoti hai aur ve krodhit hote hain. Aage chhalpoorn jue ka prasang aata hai. Pandav rajya khokar van mein jate hain. Krishna vahan unse milne aate hain. Katha ke yeh prasang baad ke upadesh ki bhoomika hain, apaman ya jue ka samarthan nahin.

Yudhishthir poochhte hain ki parivar sahit sankat se kaise niklen aur kis devata ka smaran karen. Krishna Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi ke Anant vrat ka varnan karte hain. Yudhishthir poochhte hain: Anant kaun hain—Shesh, Takshak, Paramatma ya Brahma? Krishna kehte hain ki Anant unka hi swaroop hai. Ve Anant ko kaal se jodte hain, jismein chhote samaykhand, din-raat, paksh, mahine, ritu, varsh aur yug aate hain.

Krishna apne Prithvi ka bhar kam karne vale avatar aur vyapak divya satta ka varnan karte hain. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiv, devsamooh, Surya-Chandra, vishva, dishayen, parvat, nakshatra, Prithvi aur patal us vyapakata mein kahe jate hain.

English meaning: Suta introduces Yudhishthira's Rajasuya sacrifice and assembly, made with Krishna, Bhima and Arjuna, with many guests. Duryodhana mistakes water and a shining floor; falling brings laughter and anger. Deceptive gambling follows. The Pandavas lose their kingdom and enter the forest, where Krishna visits. These events frame the later teaching, not endorsement of humiliation or gambling. Yudhishthira asks how his family may escape distress and which deity to remember. Krishna describes an Anant vow on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi. Asked whether Anant is Shesha, Takshaka, the supreme self or Brahma, Krishna identifies Anant with his own form and with time: its small divisions, day and night, fortnights, months, seasons, years and ages. He describes his incarnation to relieve the earth's burden and a universal divine presence encompassing Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, gods, sun and moon, the cosmos, directions, mountains, stars, earth and netherworlds. This is a religious worldview, not physics or calendar calculation. Yudhishthira asks who previously observed the vow and what its method and benefits are said to be. Krishna begins the account of Shila and Kaundinya.

Roman Hindi meaning: Yudhishthir ke prashn ka uttar Anant ke vyapak dharmik swaroop aur ek purane vrat-prasang se diya jata hai.

Kaundinya Shila ko bailgadi mein lekar jate hain. Yamuna ke kinare ve nitya karm ke liye rukte hain. Shila laal vastra pehne striyon ko puja karte dekhti hain aur poochhti hain ki ve kya kar rahi hain. Striyan Anant-vrat batati hain. Katha mein Chaturdashi, Vishnu ki aaradhana, chaudah ganthon vala ranga sootra, arpan aur bhojan bantne ka varnan aata hai. Purush aur stri ke alag haathon ka source-niyam bhi hai, lekin yahan kisi haath ka nirdesh nahin diya jata; is chayan se har parampara ka mat tay nahin hota. Shila striyon se sunkar vrat karti hain, bhojan ka kuchh bhag deti hain aur vapas yatra mein judti hain.

Aage ghar mein sampannata aur maan-samman ka varnan hota hai. Ek din Kaundinya Shila ke haath mein sootra dekhte hain. Kaundinya krodh mein sootra ko aag mein phenk dete hain. Shila use bachakar doodh mein rakhti hain. Katha phir ghar ki dasha bigadne ki or badhti hai. Dhan-vriddhi ka chamatkar, sandeh aur sootra jalana katha ke prasang hain; dhaga samriddhi ki guarantee nahin aur sathi ki aastha par niyantran sahi aacharan ka nirdesh nahin.

English meaning: In the Krita age Sumantu, of Vasishtha's lineage, marries Diksha, Bhrigu's daughter. Their daughter is named Shila and described as Sushila, well-conducted. After Diksha dies Sumantu marries Karkasha. The source calls her quarrelsome; this is not a judgment of all stepmothers or women. Shila decorates the home with auspicious designs. She marries the sage Kaundinya. Her father wishes to provide food for their departure, but household conflict leaves little available. Kaundinya takes Shila in an ox cart. They stop beside the Yamuna for his daily observances. Seeing red-clothed women worshipping, Shila asks about their practice. They describe Anant-vrat: Chaturdashi, worship of Vishnu, a coloured fourteen-knotted thread, offerings and sharing food. The source also distinguishes the hands used by men and women, but this reader prescribes neither hand and does not settle every tradition's position. Hearing the women, Shila observes the vow, gives part of the food and rejoins the journey. Prosperity and esteem follow in the narrative. Later Kaundinya notices the thread on Shila's hand and suspects an attempt to control him. She says it remembers Anant and attributes prosperity to his favour. Angrily Kaundinya throws the thread into fire; Shila rescues it into milk. The story turns toward household decline. Miraculous enrichment, suspicion and burning the thread are story events: a thread does not guarantee wealth, and controlling a partner's faith is not a recommended practice.

Roman Hindi meaning: Shila ka vrat aur sootra par Kaundinya ka krodh katha ki ghatnayen hain, parivar ya dhan ke liye sarvabhaum niyam nahin.

Anant Kaundinya se ghar lautne aur chaudah varshon tak vrat karne ko kehte hain. Ve parivar, sukh aur ant mein Punarvasu nakshatra se jude sthan ka phal batate hain. Yeh source ke divya vachan hain, pathak se liya gaya sankalp ya bachchon aur samriddhi ki guarantee nahin. Kaundinya van mein mile vriksha aur praniyon ka rahasya poochhte hain.

Anant batate hain ki aam ka vriksha pehle vidvan tha, jisne apna gyan doosron ko nahin diya. Gaay us bhoomi ka prateek batayi jati hai jismein boya beej nahin upajta. Bail dharma se juda hai. Donon sarovar pehle behnen thin; ve dharma-adharma ki baat aapas mein bantti thin, lekin atithi, zarooratmand aur mangne valon ko bhojan ya sahayata nahin deti thin. Gadhe ko krodh aur haathi ko mad se joda jata hai. Vriddh brahman svayam Anant hain aur gufa sansar ki gehrai ka roopak hai. Yeh katha ke naitik prateek hain, kisi ped, pashu, mahila ya bhookhe vyakti ke pichhle janm ka vastavik nirnay nahin.

Anant adrishya ho jate hain. Kaundinya is anubhav ko svapn jaisa maankar ghar lautte hain aur katha ke anusar bataye hue varshon tak vrat karte hain.

Soot antim phal-vachan ke saath katha poori karte hain. Sukh, mukti aur vansh ke dharmik aashvasan source ke bheetar hain, vastavik dukh ka dosh ya anivarya jeevan-bhar ka niyam nahin. Yahan Anant-vrat katha samapt hoti hai. Uske baad chhapa alag udyapan-vidhan is path ka hissa nahin hai; yeh punarkathan us vidhi, dhaga bandhane ke mantra ya sthaniya Ganesh-visarjan programme ka vikalp nahin.

English meaning: Anant tells Kaundinya to return home and observe the vow for fourteen years, speaking of family, happiness and a final place associated with the Punarvasu star. These are divine promises within the source, not a commitment extracted from readers or guarantees of children and wealth. Kaundinya asks about the forest encounters. Anant explains that the mango tree was formerly a learned man who withheld knowledge. The cow represents land where sown seed does not grow; the bull is associated with dharma. The two ponds were sisters who exchanged discussion of dharma and adharma but gave no food or help to guests, vulnerable people or those asking. The donkey is associated with anger and the elephant with pride. The old Brahmin is Anant himself and the cave a metaphor for the depths of worldly existence. These moral symbols do not establish an actual past-life judgment of a tree, animal, woman or hungry person. Anant disappears. Returning home with the experience seeming dreamlike, Kaundinya observes the years described in the story. Happiness returns and he remains in remembrance of Vishnu. Krishna commends Anant's remembrance to Yudhishthira. The closing discourse includes fourteen years and annual observance, claims that reading or hearing removes wrongdoing and leads to Hari's abode, and the Pandavas worshipping Anant with their family. Suta completes the account with concluding benefit claims. Happiness, liberation and lineage remain devotional assurances within the source, not blame for actual suffering or mandatory lifelong rules. The Anant-vrat katha ends here. The separately printed udyapana manual that follows is excluded; this retelling is not a substitute for that rite, thread-tying formulas or a local Ganesh immersion programme.

Roman Hindi meaning: Katha prateekon ki vyakhya aur antim phal-vachanon sahit poori hoti hai; bahuvarshiya vrat ya labh pathak par lagu nahin kiye jate.

What is Anant Vrat Katha — Complete Selected Retelling?

Read the complete selected Anant-vrat account in four original prose parts with Hindi, Roman-Hindi and English. It includes Krishna and Yudhishthira's opening dialogue, Shila/Sushila and Kaundinya, the forest search, Anant's explanations and the closing discourse. This is a condensed retelling of Vrataraja's complete katha, not a Sanskrit transcription, a proved Mahabharata chapter or a formal thread-tying manual.

Complete selected katha, not the surrounding manual

The selected 1897 Vrataraja account runs from Suta's opening after 'Atha katha' through numbered position 133 and its own colophon, physical scans 559–567. Preliminary worship and the following separately headed udyapana manual are excluded. The entire narrative and concluding explanations are condensed, not translated verse by verse.

Names, numbering and edition limits

The print names the daughter Shila and describes her as Sushila, well-conducted. She is not silently renamed from a calendar summary. After 100 the print abbreviates its numbers; final 33 is position 133. The catalogued 1884 print confirms the whole sequence with spelling and footnote variations. No critically established epic chapter attribution is claimed.

A story is not a mandatory vow

Fourteen knots, arm placement, multi-year observance and gifts are reported within the source, not prescribed here. The festival hub retains its calendar publishers' conflicting arm rules and chooses neither. Optional prayer is not claimed ritually equivalent to the formal vow. No compulsory fast, thread, purchase, fourteen-year commitment or fear-based correction is imposed.

Distress and rewards need careful context

The narrative links loss to disrespect of Anant and promises recovery, descendants and a celestial destination. These remain source claims, not explanations of real poverty, illness or family conflict, fertility guarantees or judgments of someone's devotion. Kaundinya's despair is reported without self-harm method or endorsement. Divine intervention is not a substitute for practical support.
