Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda 6.58.1–36, Sanskrit Wikisource revision 336439, not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Yudhishthir Ashvin ke Krishna paksh ki ekadashi ka naam poochhte hain. Krishna use Indira kehte hain aur uske mahatmya ko paap se mukti, poorvajon ki gati aur katha sunne ke Vajapeya-saman phal se jodte hain. Yeh granth ke dharmik ashvasan hain. Iske baad Kritayug ki katha aati hai. Mahishmati ke raja Indrasen dharmapoorvak rajya chalate the. Unke putra-pautra the, dhan aur anna tha aur unka mann Vishnu-bhakti mein laga rahta tha. Ve Govind ke naamon ka jap aur adhyatma ka dhyan karte the.

Ek din raja sabha mein baithe the. Katha mein Narad aakash se vahan aate hain. Indrasen uthkar haath jodte hain, unka samman karke aasan dete hain.

English meaning: Yudhishthira asks the name of the Ekadashi in Ashvina's dark fortnight. Krishna identifies Indira and associates its greatness with release from sin, a better state for ancestors and hearing merit compared to a Vajapeya sacrifice. These are the scripture's religious assurances. He then tells a story set in Kritayuga. Indrasena rules Mahishmati righteously, has children and grandchildren, wealth and grain, and is devoted to Vishnu. He repeats Govinda's names and reflects on spiritual matters. One day, while the king sits in his assembly, Narada arrives from the sky within the narrative. Indrasena rises with joined hands, honours him and provides a seat. He says all is well through the sage's grace and that seeing him has made his sacrificial acts fruitful. He respectfully asks why Narada has come. This does not assess any modern family's finances or the condition of its ancestors.

Roman Hindi meaning: Yudhishthir Ashvin ke Krishna paksh ki ekadashi ka naam poochhte hain.

Narad kehte hain ki ve Brahmalok se Yamalok gaye the. Yeh katha ke apne karan hain, kisi shokakul parivar ke bare mein praman nahin.

Pita ne Narad se apne putra tak sandesh pahunchane ko kaha: ve Yam ke sameep hain aur chahte hain ki putra Indira ke punya ka samarpan karke unhe svarg pahunchaye. Narad raja se pita ke liye yeh vrat karne ko kehte hain aur katha ke bheetar uski shakti se svarg-prapti ka ashvasan dete hain. Indrasen tab vidhi, paksh aur tithi poochhte hain. Is samvad ko kisi mrit vyakti ki paralok-dasha jaanne ki prakriya, shok ke liye dosharopan ya sunishchit mukti ka vaada na samjhein.

English meaning: Narada says he travelled from Brahma's world to Yama's, where the Sun's son welcomed him and gave him a seat. There he saw Indrasena's father. Although the father had performed many meritorious acts, the narrative attributes his presence there to a defect in a vow and some obstruction connected with a former birth. These are the story's explanations, not evidence about a grieving family. The father asked Narada to carry a message to his son: he remains near Yama and wishes his son to dedicate Indira's merit to send him to heaven. Narada accordingly urges the king to observe it for his father and promises a heavenly destination within the story. Indrasena asks about the method, fortnight and day. This dialogue is not a means of diagnosing a deceased person's afterlife, blaming bereavement or guaranteeing liberation.

Roman Hindi meaning: Narad kehte hain ki ve Brahmalok se Yamalok gaye the.

Dashami mein pratah aur madhyahna snan, shraddhapoorvak pitri-shraddha, ek baar bhojan aur bhoomi par shayan ka varnan hai. Ekadashi mein mukh dhone, dantadhavan chhodne aur nirahar rahkar agle din bhojan aur Vishnu ki sharan lene ka sankalp aata hai. Sankalp ka bhav yahan bataya gaya hai; kisi mantra ko alag nikalkar anivarya vidhi nahin banaya gaya.

Aage Shalagram shila ke samne snan, dhoop-gandh se Hrishikesh ki pooja aur Keshav ke sameep ratri-jagaran varnit hain. Dvadashi ki subah Hari-pooja aur pitaron ke liye shraddha kaha gaya hai. Gehoon ka choorn, jau, chawal, til, urad aur chane jaise annon ka ullekh milta hai. Brahmanon ko samman, bhojan aur dakshina dene aur sambandhiyon, beti ke putra aur apne putron ke saath sanyat vani se bhojan karne ka varnan hai. Narad raja se savadhanipoorvak vidhi poori karne ko kehte hain.

Yeh poore chayanit adhyay ka varnan hai, vyavaharik shraddha-manual nahin. Bhoomi par sona, svachchhata chhodna, bhookh sahna, raat bhar jagna ya dakshina dena is paath ki shart nahin hai. Bhojan, pani, vishram, svachchhata aur avashyak upchar uplabdh rakhein; apni vyaktigat shraddha-tithi ko is katha se na nikalein.

English meaning: Narada describes a sequence from Ashvina's dark Dashami through Dvadashi. Dashami includes morning and midday bathing, ancestral shraddha with faith, one meal and sleeping on the ground. Ekadashi includes washing the face, omitting tooth-cleaning and a resolve to remain without food and pleasures, eat the next day and seek Vishnu's refuge. The resolve is described in prose, not extracted as a compulsory sacred formula. The text then places bathing before the Shalagrama stone, worship of Hrishikesha with incense and fragrance, and a vigil near Keshava. On Dvadashi morning it describes Hari worship and ancestral shraddha, mentioning wheat flour, barley, rice, sesame, black gram and chickpeas. It honours Brahmins with food and gifts and describes eating with relatives, a daughter's son and one's sons, with restrained speech. Narada urges careful completion. This covers the selected chapter's discourse, not a practical shraddha manual. Floor sleeping, abandoning hygiene, enduring hunger, staying awake or giving gifts are not conditions of this reader. Food, water, rest, hygiene and necessary treatment remain available; do not derive an individual's ancestral tithi from the story.

Roman Hindi meaning: Narad Ashvin Krishna Dashami se Dvadashi tak ki vidhi batate hain.

English meaning: Narada says the king's ancestors will reach Vishnu's world and then disappears. Krishna relates that Indrasena follows the described observance with the royal household, sons and servants. Within the religious story, flowers fall from the sky and his father travels on Garuda to Hari's abode. Indrasena rules without obstruction, installs his son on the throne and later reaches heaven himself. Krishna closes the account by praising reading and hearing it as release from sin, enjoyment here and a long stay in Vishnu's world. A separate chapter-58 colophon identifies Ashvina's dark Indira Ekadashi within the Uttara section's Umapati–Narada dialogue. The chapter's immediate framing is Krishna–Yudhishthira; these two dialogue levels are not collapsed. The flowers, Garuda and otherworldly destinations are religious imagery, not proof of a loved one's liberation or grounds to pressure a family into observance.

Roman Hindi meaning: Narad kehte hain ki is vidhi se raja ke pitar Vishnulok pahunchenge aur phir antardhan ho jate hain.
