Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda 6.59.1–28, Sanskrit Wikisource revision 336441, not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Yudhishthir Ashvin Shukla paksh ki ekadashi ka naam poochhte hain. Krishna use Papankusha batate hain aur us din Padmanabh roop ki pooja ka varnan karte hain.

English meaning: Yudhishthira asks the name of Ashvina's bright Ekadashi. Krishna identifies Papankusha and describes worship of Padmanabha. He compares bowing to eagle-bannered Vishnu with the fruit of prolonged, disciplined austerity, and remembrance of his names with the merit of earthly pilgrimage sites. Refuge in bow-bearing Janardana and even incidental observance are praised as protection from Yama's punishment, including when serious wrongdoing is mentioned. This is the source's liberation language, not permission to conceal wrongdoing, evade accountability or withhold help from victims. Krishna then warns in both directions against deity-denigration: a Vaishnava insulting Shiva and a Shaiva/Pashupata insulting Vishnu. The text uses hell imagery, including Raurava for fourteen Indra-periods in the latter case. This is a religious warning, not authority to threaten another community or punish anyone. No hunter character or death story occurs in this chapter; the complete teaching dialogue is the selected account.

Roman Hindi meaning: Yudhishthir Ashvin Shukla paksh ki ekadashi ka naam poochhte hain.

Krishna Padmanabh ke vrat ko advitiya pavitrata vala batate hain. Paath paap ke rahne aur upvas dvara hatne ka kathan karta hai, phir sahasra Ashvamedh aur saikadon Rajasuya ke saath tulna dekar ekadashi ko unse bhi shreshtha kehta hai. Svarg, moksha, sharirik arogya, jeevansathi, putra, dhan aur mitra iske dharmik phal kahe jate hain. Ganga, Gaya, Kashi, Pushkar aur Kurukshetra se bhi iski mahima badi batayi jati hai.

Ratri-jagaran aur upvas ko Vishnupad se joda gaya hai. Mata, pita aur patni ke paksh ke das-das vyaktiyon ke uddhar ka varnan aata hai. Divya chaar-bhuj roop, Garud-chihna, malaen aur peele vastra pahne Haridham jane ka chitra hai; chune hue Sanskrit mein peetavastra hain, tulna ke Angrezi paath mein safed vastra milte hain.

English meaning: Krishna praises Padmanabha's observance as uniquely purifying. The discourse speaks of sin remaining until fasting removes it, then ranks Ekadashi above thousands of Ashvamedha and hundreds of Rajasuya sacrifices; it also praises observance under a pretext. Heaven, liberation, bodily health, a spouse, sons, wealth and friends are named as religious fruits. Its greatness is compared favourably with Ganga, Gaya, Kashi, Pushkara and Kurukshetra. Vigil and fasting are associated with Vishnu's abode, and deliverance is claimed for ten people each on the mother's, father's and wife's sides. A heavenly image follows: four arms, Garuda emblems, garlands and yellow garments. The selected Sanskrit has yellow garments; the English comparison has white. Praise extends to childhood, youth and old age, ending with Hari's world and freedom from sin. These are religious assurances, not guarantees of health, children, wealth, friends, immunity from adversity or an ancestor's condition. Do not compel children, older people or anyone else to fast or keep vigil, or attribute illness and family difficulty to insufficient worship.

Roman Hindi meaning: Krishna Padmanabh ke vrat ko advitiya pavitrata vala batate hain.

Paath daan mein sona, til, bhoomi, gaay, anna, jal, joote, chhata aur vastra ka ullekh karta hai aur inhe Yam-darshan se mukti ke phal se jodta hai. Phir bina punya-karm beette din ki tulna lohar ki dhaunkni se karta hai, jo saans-jaisi hava chalati hai par jeevit nahin hai. Yeh upma manushya ki garima ghatane ka aadhar nahin hai. Nirdhan vyakti ke liye bhi apni shakti ke anusar snan aur daan jaise achchhe karmon ki charcha hai; samarthya ka shabd mahatvapoorna hai, kharidari ya pashu-daan anivarya nahin.

Hom, snan, jap, dhyan aur yagya-satra jaise karmon ki prashansa ke baad deergh jeevan, dhan, kuleenata aur rogheenata ko punya se joda gaya hai. Iske vipreet adharm se durgati aur dharm se svarg ka kathan hai.

Alag samapan-vakya adhyay 59 aur Ashvin Shukla Papankusha ko pahchanta hai. Yeh poore chayanit adhyay ka punarkathan hai, sunishchit phal vala daan ya pooja-manual nahin.

English meaning: The text lists gifts of gold, sesame, land, a cow, food, water, footwear, an umbrella and clothing and associates them with avoiding Yama. It compares days without meritorious acts to a blacksmith's bellows, moving air like breath without living. This analogy is not grounds to diminish anyone's dignity. Even a poor person is encouraged to undertake good acts such as bathing and giving according to capacity; capacity matters, and purchases or animal gifts are not compulsory. After praising fire offerings, bathing, recitation, meditation and sacrificial sessions, the source connects merit with longevity, wealth, noble birth and absence of disease. It contrasts unrighteousness leading to adversity with righteousness leading to heaven. These remain the source's religious moral language, not judgments of poverty, illness or birth. Caste or lineage does not determine rights or dignity. In the final verse Krishna says he has answered the king's question about Papankusha and asks what else he wishes to hear. The separate colophon identifies chapter 59 and Ashvina's bright Papankusha. This completes the selected chapter's retelling; it is not a donation or worship manual with guaranteed results.
