Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda 6.50.1–20, Sanskrit Wikisource revision 336431, not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Yudhishthir Janardan se Jyeshth ke Krishna paksh ki Ekadashi ka naam aur mahatmya sunna chahte hain. Krishna logon ke hit ke liye kiye gaye prashn ki prashansa karte hain aur Ekadashi ka naam Apara batate hain. Ve ise bahut punya dene wali, bade paap nasht karne wali, putra dene wali aur lok mein prasiddhi se judi kehte hain. Chayanit Sanskrit mein putra ka ullekh hai; tulna ke Angrezi paath mein iske sthan par anant phal hai.

Inhein narak tatha paap se joda gaya hai aur Apara ke palan ko us paap se chhutkare ki dharmik prashansa di gayi hai.

Krishna yuddh se hatkar apne kshatradharm ko chhodne wale Kshatriya tatha apne guru ki ninda karne wale vidvan shishya ka ullekh karte hain. Unke liye bhi bhayavah narak aur Apara se sadgati ka daava aata hai. Yeh pracheen naitik aur samajik dharanayein hain, aadhunik chikitsa, prajanan-svasthya, yuddh mein bhaag lene ya kisi guru ki aalochana par sarvabhaumik nirnay nahin. Prashn karna, durvyavahar ki shikayat aur surakshit upchar lena anuchit nahin hai. Prarthana hani rokne, javabdehi, nyay aur sudhar ka vikalp nahin banti.

English meaning: Yudhishthira asks Janardana about the name and significance of Jyeshtha's dark-fortnight Ekadashi. Krishna praises the question as seeking people's welfare and names Apara. He associates it with abundant merit, destruction of grave sins, a son and worldly renown. The selected Sanskrit mentions a son; the English comparison instead speaks of unending fruit. Neither offspring nor fame is guaranteed. The discourse names killing a Brahmin, destroying one's family, killing an embryo, disparagement and desire for another person's wife. It also condemns false testimony, dishonest measures and scales, deception involving Vedas or scriptures, fraudulent astrology or calculation and medical fraud. These are associated with sin and hell, while observance of Apara is religiously praised as release from sin. Krishna then mentions a warrior abandoning his prescribed martial duty by leaving battle and a learned pupil disparaging a teacher. Fearful hell and deliverance through Apara are again invoked. These are ancient moral and social categories, not universal modern judgments about medicine, reproductive healthcare, participation in war or criticism of a teacher. Asking questions, reporting abuse and obtaining safe treatment are not wrongdoing. Prayer is no substitute for stopping harm, accountability, justice and repair.

Roman Hindi meaning: Yudhishthir Janardan se Jyeshth ke Krishna paksh ki Ekadashi ka naam aur mahatmya sunna chahte hain.

In sthanon, grah-sthitiyon aur daanon ka ullekh adhyay ki punya-tulna hai, vartaman yatra-calendar, jyotishiya ganana, grahan-snan ka surakshit samay ya pashu-daan ka nirdesh nahin. Kumbhakedar ko yahan kisi naye aadhunik aayojan ki tareekh nahin di jati. Yatra, kharid, daan ya jokhimpoorna jal-pravesh ke bina bhi adhyay padha ja sakta hai.

English meaning: Krishna continues with comparisons to sacred journeys and observances. He mentions merit at Prayaga in Magha when the Sun is in Makara, bathing at Kashi during an eclipse, ancestral satisfaction through offerings at Gaya, bathing in Gautami when Jupiter is in Simha and in Krishnaveni when Jupiter is in Kanya. Apara is also compared with Kumbhakedara sight, visiting Badari's hermitage and its sacred places, Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse, elephant, horse and gold gifts, and sacrifice with accompanying gifts. The discussion then mentions a cow in a condition related to parturition, gold and land. The English comparison calls the cow recently calved; this retelling does not turn the Sanskrit wording into an animal-handling procedure. These places, planetary positions and gifts form the chapter's devotional comparisons, not a current travel calendar, astrological calculation, safe eclipse-bathing time or animal-gift instruction. Kumbhakedara is not assigned a new modern event date here. Reading requires no journey, purchase, gift or risky entry into water.

Roman Hindi meaning: Krishna Apara ka mahatmya aage teerthon ki tulna se kehte hain.

Krishna phir Apara ko paap-roopi vriksh ke liye kulhadi, paap-roopi indhan ke liye van-agni, andhakar ke liye Surya aur mrig ke liye Singh kehte hain.

Padhne aur sunne ka phal hazar gayon ke daan ke saman bataya gaya hai. Iske baad adhyay 50 ka alag samapan-vakya Uttarkhand ke Umapati-Narad samvad mein Jyeshth Krishna Apara Ekadashi ko naam deta hai. Tatkal prashnottar Krishna-Yudhishthir ka hai; in do staron ko na milayein.

Poora chayanit adhyay upadesh hai. Bhojan, pani aur avashyak upchar uplabdh rakhein; is paath ke liye upavas ya godaan zaroori nahin hai aur prarthana hani ke vastavik parinam nahin mitati.

English meaning: Krishna portrays Apara as an axe against the tree of sin, forest fire against its fuel, sunlight against its darkness and a lion against its deer. These are poetic images of release from sin. Life without the Ekadashi vow is then compared with transient water-bubbles and small creatures. This is not a reason to call the lives of non-fasting people worthless or less valuable. Fasting on Apara and worship of Trivikrama are associated with release from sin and honour in Vishnu's world. Krishna says he has narrated its significance for people's welfare. Reading and hearing are praised as equal to giving a thousand cows. A separate chapter-50 colophon names Jyeshtha's dark Apara within the Uttara section's Umapati–Narada dialogue. The immediate exchange remains Krishna–Yudhishthira; those two levels are kept distinct. The complete selected chapter is teaching, not the popular character story of Mahidhvaja, Vajradhvaja or Dhoumya. Do not measure dignity, health, offspring or justice by devotional rewards. Food, water and necessary treatment remain available; reading requires no fast or cow gift, and prayer does not erase the real consequences of harm.

Roman Hindi meaning: Krishna phir Apara ko paap-roopi vriksh ke liye kulhadi, paap-roopi indhan ke liye van-agni, andhakar ke liye Surya aur mrig ke liye Singh kehte hain.

Read the complete selected Apara Ekadashi teaching chapter, Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda 6.50.1–20, in three original Hindi prose parts with full Roman-Hindi and English. This is the whole discourse and ending, not a Sanskrit transcription, a popular character-story substitute or a compulsory ritual manual.

Complete selected teaching chapter

Sources and reuse

The complete pinned Wikisource API chapter revision 336431 controls this adaptation under CC BY-SA 4.0. Its exact text was read in full and compared throughout with Wisdomlib's Sanskrit presentation and full grouped English chapter. Wikisource rendered retrieval failed; no rendered inspection is claimed for this batch. These electronic presentations do not establish independent print collation. No modern translated prose is copied.

Selected wording and comparison differences

Verse 3's putradayini (son-giving) is retained as the Sanskrit's religious claim; the grouped English instead says unending fruit. Verse 16's ardhaprasuta cow is described as linked to parturition, not silently changed to the English recently calved cow. Kumbhakedara remains a source place-name, not an inferred modern festival. No popular Mahidhvaja/Vajradhvaja/Dhoumya episode is inserted.

Safe reading and accountability

Rewards, sin, heaven, rebirth, offspring, marriage and social exclusions are ancient religious claims, not guaranteed outcomes or judgments of present-day people. Do not withhold food, water, sleep, hygiene or treatment, endorse discrimination, require gifts or replace accountability with ritual. Dates remain on the festival hub; the chapter is not a date or clock-time source.
