Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda 6.53.1–37, Sanskrit Wikisource revision 336434, not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Isi Ashadh Shukla charcha mein chayanit paath 'Kamika' naam bhi kehta hai. Krishna samast jagat aur teen pracheen devon ke prasang mein Hari ki Ekadashi-pooja ki prashansa karte hain. Yeh naam srot ki visheshta hai, alag Shravana Krishna Kamika ki tithi ko yahan lane ka karan nahin.

Yudhishthir poochhte hain ki Bhagavan kyon sote hain, Bali ke paas kyon rahte hain, bhoomi par shayan ka kya prasang hai aur anya log kya karein. Aage ka uttar katha aur Chaturmas ka dharmik vivechan hai, pratyek parivar ke liye anivarya vidhan nahin.

English meaning: Yudhishthira asks the name and method of Ashadha's bright-fortnight Ekadashi. Krishna names Shayani and connects it with heaven, liberation and release from sin. Comparing hearing it with a Vajapeya sacrifice, he says the creator made it to remove sin and praises simply listening. The account commends observance by Vishnu's devotees and worship of Vamana with lotuses in Ashadha. Within this same bright-fortnight discussion the selected text also uses Kamika. Krishna praises Hari's Ekadashi worship in relation to the whole world and three ancient gods. This name is a source feature, not grounds for moving the separate Shravana dark Kamika date here. Yudhishthira asks why the Lord sleeps, why he stays with Bali, what sleeping on the ground means and what others should do. The reply is religious narrative and Chaturmas discourse, not a compulsory rule for every household.

Roman Hindi meaning: Yudhishthir Ashadh ke Shukla paksh ki Ekadashi ka naam aur vidhi poochhte hain.

Krishna Treta yug ke daityaraj Bali ko pratidin pooja, yagya aur vrat karne wala bhakt batate hain. Indra, devguru aur devata milkar Bhagavan ki stuti karte hain. Bhagavan panchvein avatar Vaman ke roop mein aate hain. Katha unke virat roop aur vakchhal ka ullekh karti hai; Bali satya par sthir rahte hain. Shukra chetate hain ki samne Narayan hain.

Vaman saadhe teen pag bhoomi mangte hain aur Bali unke haath mein sankalp ka jal arpit karte hain. Virat roop mein unke charanon se Bhurlok, ghutnon se Bhuvarlok, kamar se Svarlok, udar se Maharlok, hriday se Janlok, kanth se Tapolok aur mukh se Satyalok ka sambandh kaha jata hai; sir usse oopar hai. Chandra, Surya, grah aur tare bhi is vishvaroop mein aate hain. Indra aur dev, nag, yaksh, gandharv aur kinnar Vaidik stuti karte hain.

Shesh aadha pag chayanit Sanskrit mein Bali ki peeth par rakha jata hai; Angrezi tulna mein sir kaha gaya hai. Yahan peeth ka paath rakha gaya hai. Bali Rasatal bheje jate hain. Unki namrata se Janardan prasann hote hain aur Ashadh Shukla ke prasang mein phir Kamika naam aata hai.

Yeh brahmand-roop aur dev-daitya samvad dharmik katha hain. Vakchhal chhal karne ki anumati nahin, aur Bali ka prasang kisi vyakti par apman ya balprayog ka nirdesh nahin. Prachalit teen pag ya sir wala roop chupchap is chayanit paath mein nahin milaya gaya.

English meaning: Krishna describes Bali, the daitya king in Treta, as a devotee performing daily worship, sacrifices and vows. Indra, the gods' teacher and the gods praise the Lord together. The Lord appears as Vamana, the fifth incarnation. The account mentions his cosmic form and verbal deception; Bali remains committed to truth. Shukra warns that this is Narayana. Vamana requests three-and-a-half steps of land, and Bali places the vow's water in his hand. In his cosmic form the feet correspond to Bhurloka, knees to Bhuvarloka, waist to Svarloka, belly to Maharloka, heart to Janaloka, throat to Tapoloka and face to Satyaloka; the head lies above. Moon, sun, planets and stars enter this form. Indra and the gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas and kinnaras offer Vedic praise. Taking Bali by the hand, the Lord fills the earth with three steps. The remaining half-step is placed on Bali's back in the selected Sanskrit; the English comparison says head. This adaptation retains back. Bali is sent to Rasatala. Janardana is pleased by his humility, and Kamika again appears in the Ashadha bright-fortnight context. The cosmic form and divine dialogue are religious narrative. Verbal deception is not permission to deceive, nor is Bali's episode an instruction to humiliate or use force against anyone. The familiar three-step or head version is not silently blended into this edition.

Roman Hindi meaning: Krishna Treta yug ke daityaraj Bali ko pratidin pooja, yagya aur vrat karne wala bhakt batate hain.

Bhagavan ka ek roop Bali ke saath rahta hai; doosra Kshirsagar mein Shesh ki peeth par aane wali Kartiki tak shayan karta hai. Beech ke samay mein dharmik aacharan ka vivechan aata hai. Ekadashi aur chaar mahino ke palan ko shreshth gati se joda jata hai. Shankh, chakra aur gada dharan karne wale Bhagavan ki pooja tatha jagaran ki prashansa hai. Uska punya Brahma bhi nahin gin sakte, aisa kaha jata hai. Pracheen 'shvapach' pad ke ullekh ke saath bhi Bhagavan ke lok mein priya hone, bhog aur mukti ki prashansa hai; Angrezi tulna ka Chandal pad yahan chupchap nahin rakha gaya.

Deep, Palash-patra mein bhojan aur bhoomi par sone ki prashansa aati hai. Paath Shravana mein shaak, Bhadrapad mein dahi, Ashvin mein doodh aur Kartik mein dvidal ke tyag ka varnan karta hai.

Bhojan, pani, vishram aur avashyak upchar jari rakhein.

English meaning: One form of the Lord stays with Bali; another rests on Shesha's back in the ocean of milk until the coming Kartiki. The intervening period brings a discussion of religious conduct. Ekadashi and four-month observance are associated with the highest destination. Worship of the Lord bearing conch, discus and mace and a vigil are praised, with merit said to exceed even Brahma's counting. Enjoyment, liberation and being dear in the Lord's world are praised even for a person described by the ancient label shvapacha; the English comparison's chandala is not silently substituted. Lamps, meals on Palasha leaves and sleeping on the ground are praised. The text describes avoiding greens in Shravana, curd in Bhadrapada, milk in Ashvina and dvidala in Kartika. Dvidala is retained in its pulse context, not made a ban on every grain. Alternatively, celibate observance is praised as leading to the highest destination. These are statements in the selected chapter, not a compulsory four-month diet or instructions to lose sleep or sleep on the ground. Ancient social labels do not justify discrimination. Food, water, rest and necessary treatment continue. Attend any lamp and extinguish it before leaving or sleeping. Religious rewards are not guaranteed health or liberation.

Roman Hindi meaning: Bhagavan ka ek roop Bali ke saath rahta hai; doosra Kshirsagar mein Shesh ki peeth par aane wali Kartiki tak shayan karta hai.

English meaning: Krishna advises remembering the vow consistently. The selected text singles out dark-fortnight Ekadashis between Shayani and Bodhini for a householder and prohibits other dark Ekadashis. This is source-specific advice, not a universal calendar ban or grounds for deleting other observances. The closing passage compares hearing the account with an Ashvamedha sacrifice. A separate colophon names chapter 53 within the Uttara section's Uma–Maheshvara dialogue; the immediate exchange is Krishna–Yudhishthira. All 37 numbered positions and the closing statement are thus covered. This is a condensed original retelling of the selected chapter, not a verbatim Sanskrit reading or every popular story. Hearing's religious reward does not promise definite worldly results. Actual annual dates and tradition differences belong on the linked festival hub; no clock time can be derived from this account.
