What is Gaiye Ganpati Jagvandan?

Gaiye Ganpati Jagvandan is the first pad of Goswami Tulsidas’s Vinaya Patrika: four couplets in Braj praising Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvati, and ending with Tulsidas’s request that Rama and Sita live in his mind. This page gives the pad in the spelling of the 1923 Tulsi-Granthavali, where the first word is गाइए; a 1926 printing has the same words.

What this pad is

Vinaya Patrika opens, as many devotional works do, by honouring Ganesha. Pad 1, in raga Bilaval, names him as son of Shankara and Bhavani, home of success, elephant-faced, fond of modakas and lord of learning. The last couplet turns the praise into a request: what Tulsidas asks of Ganesha is that Rama and Sita dwell in his heart.

Source and spelling

The text follows the 1923 Kashi Nagari Pracharini Sabha printing, which spells the first word गाइए and keeps Braj forms such as गनपति, जगबंदन, संकरसुवन and बिनायक. The 1926 Naval Kishore Press printing has the same words in modernised spelling (गाइये गणपति जगवन्दन, शंकरसुवन, विनायक), as do many later books and song sheets; the meaning is the same.
