Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Vrataraja, 1897 Khemraj print, Syamantakopakhyana 1–135; compiler attributes it to the Skanda Purana, not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Nandikeshvar Sanatkumar ko Ganesh Chaturthi ke vrat ki katha sunate hain. Ve use sankat aur apavad door karne vala kehte hain.

Vishvakarma se bani nagari, anek bhavan, parivar aur parijat ka varnan uski divya bhavyata dikhata hai; ise aitihasik nagar-ganana nahin mana gaya hai. Isi nagar mein Satrajit rehte the. Surya prasann hokar dikhai dete hain aur Satrajit unka tej, vyapak roop tatha jagat ko prakashit karne ki shakti ka stavan karte hain.

Satrajit Syamantak mani mangte hain. Surya unhen mani dete hue pratidin sona utpann hone aur shuddh dharak ki raksha ka phal batate hain; ashuddh dharak ke liye vinash ki chetavani bhi katha mein hai. Yeh chamatkari vastu ka dharmik varnan hai, dhan banane ka sadhan ya manushya ki shuddhata janchne ka niyam nahin. Mani pehankar Satrajit Dvarka aate hain. Unke prakash ko dekhkar log unhen Surya samajhte hain, lekin Krishna batate hain ki yeh Surya ki di hui mani ka tej hai.

English meaning: Nandikeshvara tells Sanatkumara of a Ganesh Chaturthi vow, describing it as removing distress and false accusation. Asked why Krishna observed it, he says it was remembered to clear a charge against Krishna. These are the narrator's devotional benefit claims, not assured outcomes for readers. The story connects Krishna's incarnation with relieving the earth's burden and introduces Dvaraka as refuge from Jarasandha's attacks. Vishvakarma's city, its many homes and families, and the parijata portray divine splendour, not an audited historical population. Satrajit worships the sun beside the sea. The sun appears, and Satrajit praises his radiance, universal form and illumination of the world. Satrajit asks for Syamantaka. Granting the jewel, the sun describes daily production of gold and protection for a pure bearer, with destruction threatened for an impure bearer. This is a miraculous object's religious description, not a wealth-making method or a test of human purity. Wearing it, Satrajit enters Dvaraka. People mistake his radiance for the sun, but Krishna explains that it comes from the sun's gift.

Roman Hindi meaning: Mani ka tej bhram utpann karta hai; source ke dhan aur raksha sambandhi vachan dharmik katha tak seemit hain.

Narad Krishna ke dukh ka karan poochhte hain. Krishna apavad aur Balram ke alag hone ki baat kehte hain. Narad ise Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi ko chandrama dekhne se jodte hain. Krishna karan poochhte hain, tab Ganesh aur chandrama ki katha sunai jati hai. Yeh source ki dharmik karan-vyakhya hai; vastavik anyay ke liye chandrama dekhne vale ko dosh nahin diya ja sakta.

Katha mein Brahma Ganesh ka stavan karte hain. Ganesh siddhiyon aur srishti ke karya se juda var dete hain, aur modak ka prasang aata hai. Aage chandrama Ganesh ke roop ko dekhkar hanste hain. Ganesh kruddh hokar kehte hain ki chandrama ko dekhne valon par apavad lagega. Bhay se chandrama chhip jate hain. Devata Brahma ke paas sahayata mangne aate hain.

Devata isi samadhan ka sandesh lekar chandrama ki or jate hain. Katha aage chandrama ki vinati aur Ganesh ke uttar tak jari rehti hai; yahin samapt nahin hoti.

English meaning: Narada asks why Krishna is distressed. Krishna describes the accusation and Balarama's departure. Narada associates this with seeing the moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. Asked why, he recounts Ganesh and the moon. This is the source's religious explanation; someone suffering actual injustice cannot be blamed for looking at the moon. Brahma praises Ganesh, who grants a boon connected with siddhis and creation; modaka also enters the account. Later the moon laughs at Ganesh's appearance. Angered, Ganesh says that people seeing the moon will incur accusations. The frightened moon hides. The gods seek Brahma's help, and he says only Ganesh's favour can resolve the difficulty. Brahma describes worship of Ganesh on the bright fourth of Bhadrapada, mentioning sweets, an image and gifts. This summarizes advice to characters in the story, not a reader's shopping list, fixed materials or complete worship instructions. The gods carry this solution to the moon. The account continues through the moon's appeal and Ganesh's answer; it does not end here.

Roman Hindi meaning: Chandra-shap ka prasang dharmik katha hai, vastavik aarop ka praman ya doshi thehrane ka aadhar nahin.

Devataon ka sandesh sunkar chandrama Ganesh ki aaradhana karte hain. Ganesh prakat hote hain. Chandrama unhen devataon ke svami aur srishti, palan tatha ant ke adhishthata kehkar stuti karte hain. Katha Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi ke darshan ke liye apavad ki baat rakhti hai aur Shukla Dvitiya ke darshan se jude bachav ka kathan bhi karti hai. Yeh chandra-darshan ka dar ya anivarya bachav-karya pathak par lagu nahin karta.

Iske baad source mein masik Krishna Chaturthi, Ganesh aur Rohini sahit chandrama ki puja, durva, modak, pratima, vastra, patra, daan, aahar-sanyam aur agni-samarpan ka varnan aata hai. Ichchha-poorti aur dosh door hone ke phal bhi kahe jate hain.

Is chayan mein Akrur se mani vapas milne ya Balram ke lautne ka atirikt drishya nahin hai; doosre granth se use yahan nahin joda gaya hai.

English meaning: Hearing the gods' message, the moon worships Ganesh, who appears. The moon praises him as lord of the gods and presiding over creation, preservation and dissolution, asking forgiveness for fear and shame. Granting a boon, Ganesh limits the curse. The account retains an accusation claim for sight on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi and a protective claim associated with sight on the bright second. This does not impose fear of moon-sighting or an obligatory protective act on readers. The source then describes monthly dark-fortnight Chaturthi, worship of Ganesh and the moon with Rohini, durva, modaka, images, clothes, vessels, gifts, dietary restraint and fire offerings. It states wishes being fulfilled and faults removed. This final discourse is included in the condensed account, but its formulas, compulsory counts, salt restriction and other severe rules are not converted into public practice instructions. The birth festival, monthly vow and every local calendar rule are not treated as identical. Narada reminds Krishna of the worship. Krishna observes it and the narrator says his accusation is cleared. Closing benefit statements commend hearing the Syamantaka and moon account to remove faults and mental distress and achieve one's tasks. These are devotional claims, not guarantees of clearing defamation, substitutes for justice or grounds to blame victims. The Nandikeshvara–Sanatkumara Syamantaka account ends here. It contains no additional scene of Akrura returning the jewel or Balarama coming back; another scripture's ending is not imported.

Roman Hindi meaning: Prarthana aur antim phal-vachan poore chayan ka bhag hain, lekin anivarya upay ya parinam ki guarantee nahin.

What is Ganesh Chaturthi Katha — Syamantaka Retelling?

Read the complete selected Syamantaka account in four original prose parts with Hindi, Roman-Hindi and English. The 1897 Vrataraja telling connects Krishna's false accusation with Ganesh and the moon, and continues through the closing prayers and benefit discussion. It is a condensed retelling, not a Ganesh birth story, Sanskrit transcription or compulsory moon-sighting remedy.

One complete selected account

The selected work is Syamantakopakhyana 1–135, from the Nandikeshvara–Sanatkumara opening through its own colophon. Vrataraja attributes it to the Skanda Purana; a critical Purana chapter identification is not claimed. The preceding Siddhivinayaka katha 1–47 and calendar/formula preface are separate and excluded. All selected narrative and closing discourse are covered, not translated verse by verse.

Do not blend the jewel traditions

This telling gives twenty-one days of combat with Jambavan and names Akrura and Shatadhanva in the later plot. It is not silently replaced with Bhagavata's twenty-eight-day account or additional conspirators. Its ending says Krishna's accusation was cleared after worship; it does not narrate Akrura returning the jewel or Balarama's reconciliation.

Source claims are not real-life penalties

Moon-sighting curses, purity rules, gold production, divine appearances and promised success belong to the selected religious narrative. Seeing the moon is not presented as evidence that you will be falsely accused. Violence, family conflict and suspicion are not advice; accusations need facts, not victim blame or a ritual remedy. No fast, corrective recitation count, fire offering or purchase is prescribed.
