Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda 6.40.1–49, Sanskrit Wikisource revision 336363, not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Dhoop, deep aur vishesh deepdaan ke baad Vaishnavon ke saath jagran aata hai. Ekagrata se aankh jhapakne jitne kshan ka jagran bhi yagya, tirth aur anya vraton se atulniya kaha jata hai; anya vrat iske solahve bhaag ke bhi tulya nahin kahe jate aur hazaron varshon ke tap ki tulna aati hai. Phir Krishna katha aarambh karte hain.

Yeh mahatmya surakshit vishram, bhojan aur pani chhodne ka nirdesh nahin. Upavas, jagran, daan aur samagri vaikalpik hain. Deep jalayein to nigrani rakhein aur sone se pehle bujhayein; dhan ya mukti ki guarantee nahin.

English meaning: Yudhishthira asks Krishna the name, method and deity of Pausha's dark Ekadashi. Krishna answers affectionately: the Ekadashi vow pleases him more than sacrifices with large gifts. It is named Saphala and worship of Narayana follows the earlier method. Comparisons with Shesha among serpents, serpent-eating Garuda among birds, Vishnu among gods and a dvija among humans praise Ekadashi among vows. Birth-based superiority is not endorsed. The Lord values those devoted to Harivasara; wealth and liberation after death are religiously praised. Worship invoking Hari's names discusses narikela, kramuka, bijapuraka, jambira, dadima, dhatri, lavanga, badari and amra. These are the source's fruit or material names, not a required shopping list or modern identification of every plant. Incense, lamps and special lamp-giving precede a vigil with Vaishnavas. Even a blink-length moment of concentrated wakefulness is praised as incomparable with sacrifices, pilgrimage and other vows; other vows are said not to equal even its one-sixteenth, with a further comparison to thousands of years of austerity. Krishna then begins the story. This praise does not direct abandonment of safe rest, food or water. Fasting, vigils, gifts and materials are optional. Attend lit lamps and extinguish before sleeping; wealth or liberation is not guaranteed.

Roman Hindi meaning: Yudhishthir Krishna se Pausha Krishna Ekadashi ka naam, vidhi aur devata poochhte hain.

Champavati ke Rajarshi Mahishmat ke paanch putra hain. Sabse bada parstri-sambandh, veshyaon mein aasakti aur madyapan sahit hanikarak aacharan mein laga hai aur pita ka dhan kharch karta hai. Brahmanon, Vaishnavon aur devataon ki ninda karta hai. Pita use Lumpaka kehte hain; pita, bandhu aur parivar rajya se nikalkar chhod dete hain. Yeh charitra ka varnan hai, kisi samuday ya vyavasay ke logon par apman ya bahishkar ka nirdesh nahin.

Lumpaka nishkasan par vichar karke ghane van mein rehne aur pita ke nagar ko lootne ka nishchay karta hai. Vah jeev-hatya, chori aur jue mein laga rehta hai. Nagar mein chori karte hue nishachara kahe logon dwara pakde jane par vah rajputra hone ka parichay deta hai aur chhod diya jata hai. Mool ka nishachara pad rakha gaya hai, use apne-aap aadhunik police ya nishchit jati nahin kaha gaya.

Vah van lautata hai, maans aur vrikshon ke phal khata hai. Uske nivas ke paas Vasudev ki upasthiti se juda anek varsh purana Ashvattha vriksh hai. Katha us vriksh ko pavitra kehti hai; Lumpaka vahin rehta hai. Rajputra hone par chhoot ya baad ka dharmik parivartan chori aur hinsa ko uchit nahin banate; vastavik hani ke liye zimmedari aur sudhar bane rehte hain.

English meaning: Royal sage Mahishmata of Champavati has five sons. The eldest engages in harmful conduct including adultery, attachment to prostitutes and drinking, and spends his father's wealth. He disparages Brahmins, Vaishnavas and gods. His father calls him Lumpaka; father, relatives and household expel and abandon him. This describes a character, not a direction to insult or exclude communities or people in an occupation. Reflecting on expulsion, Lumpaka decides to live in dense forest and plunder his father's city. He continues killing creatures, stealing and gambling. Caught stealing in the city by people called nishachara, he identifies himself as a prince and is released. The source term remains; it is not automatically equated with modern police or a particular caste. He returns to the forest, eating flesh and tree fruits. Near his dwelling stands a many-years-old ashvattha associated with Vasudeva's presence. The narrative calls the tree sacred; Lumpaka lives there. Release because of princely status or later religious change does not justify theft and violence; accountability and repair for actual harm remain.

Roman Hindi meaning: Champavati ke Rajarshi Mahishmat ke paanch putra hain.

Samay beetne aur kuchh sanchit punya ki dharmik bhoomika ke baad Pausha Krishna Dashami par Lumpaka vrikshon ke phal khata hai. Vastrahin hokar rat ki thand se peedit hota hai aur drishti jati rehti hai. Chuna Sanskrit thand kehta hai; Angrezi tulna yahan pehle garmi aur phir teevra thand kehti hai.

Sanskrit mein vah phal jutata hai; Angrezi tulna phal na milne ko kehti hai, jabki aage phal arpan donon mein hai. Chune Sanskrit ka sakaratmak phal-jutana rakha gaya hai.

Vriksh par lautate-lautate Surya ast ho jata hai. Dukhi hokar vah bahut se phal jad mein rakhta aur unse Shripati Hari ko prasann hone ki kamna karta hai. Us rat bhi use neend nahin aati. Katha mein Vishnu ise jagran aur phalon ko pooja mante hain. Anjane mein hua vrat tatha uske punya se nirvighna rajya milne ka poorvasanket aata hai. Thand, bhookh, drishti khona ya behoshi pooja ke tareeke nahin; bhojan, garam vastra, vishram aur avashyak dekhbhal ko na rokein.

English meaning: After time passes and a religious reference to accumulated merit, Lumpaka eats tree fruits on Pausha's dark Dashami. Without clothing, he suffers the night's cold and loses sight. The selected Sanskrit says cold; the English comparison first says heat and then severe cold. Near Hari's tree he finds neither sleep nor comfort, seeming lifeless. The night passes with a description of covering his mouth with his teeth; consciousness does not return even at sunrise. At midday on Saphala he regains consciousness, then enters the forest in pain with stumbling steps. Hunger leaves him too weak to kill creatures. In the Sanskrit he gathers fruit; the English comparison says he obtained none, although fruit offering follows in both. The selected Sanskrit's positive gathering is retained. The sun sets by his return to the tree. Distressed, he places many fruits at its roots and wishes Shripati Hari to be pleased by them. Again he cannot sleep. In the story Vishnu regards this as a vigil and the fruit as worship. The accidental observance and its merit anticipate obtaining an untroubled kingdom. Cold exposure, hunger, lost sight or unconsciousness are not worship methods; do not withhold food, warm clothing, rest or necessary care.

Roman Hindi meaning: Samay beetne aur kuchh sanchit punya ki dharmik bhoomika ke baad Pausha Krishna Dashami par Lumpaka vrikshon ke phal khata hai.

Surya uday hone tak Vishnu ke jane ka kathan hai. Angrezi tulna svarg jana kehti hai, par chune Sanskrit mein gantavya spasht nahin; naya drishya nahin joda gaya. Sveekriti ke baad Lumpaka divya roop vala hota aur uski buddhi Vishnu-bhakti mein lagti hai. Divya aabhooshanon se shobhit hokar nirvighna rajya pata hai.

Vah pandrah varsh rajya karta hai. Krishna ki kripa se aananddayak putra aur darah arthaat patni ya patniyon ka bahuvachan aata hai; Angrezi tulna ek patni kehti hai. Yeh sankhya ka naya parivarik itihas banane ka aadhar nahin. Rajya putra ko saunpkar vah Krishna ke sannidhya mein jata hai, jahan shok nahin kaha jata. Pita dwara aupcharik kshama ya naya abhishek-drishya is adhyay mein nahin joda gaya.

Antim upadesh mein Saphala ka palan karne vale ko is lok ka sukh aur mrityu ke baad moksha kaha jata hai. Saphala mein lage logon ka janm safal aur dhanya bataya jata hai. Padhna, sunna aur palan karna Rajasuya yagya ke phal ke saman kaha jata hai. Alag samapan adhyay 40 ko Uttarkhand ke Umapati-Narad samvad mein Pausha Krishna Saphala Ekadashi kehta hai; tatkal samvad Krishna-Yudhishthir ka hai. Sabhi 49 kramankit sthan aur samapan is maulik sankshipt gadya mein poore hain.

Upavas, jagran, daan aur khareed avashyak nahin; surakshit bhojan, pani, vastra, neend aur dekhbhal jari rakhein. Jude utsav-page ki tithiyan yahan dobara nirdharit nahin ki gayin.

English meaning: The account says Vishnu went by sunrise. The English comparison specifies heaven, but the selected Sanskrit does not state the destination; no new scene is added. An unbodied voice in the sky promises a kingdom through Saphala's favour. After assent, Lumpaka assumes a divine form and turns towards Vishnu devotion. Adorned with divine ornaments, he obtains an untroubled kingdom. He rules for fifteen years. Krishna's favour brings pleasing sons and darah, a plural form for wife or wives; the English comparison says one wife. This does not establish an invented marriage history or number. Giving the kingdom to his son, he goes to Krishna's presence, described as free of grief. No formal paternal forgiveness or new coronation scene is added to this chapter. The concluding teaching assigns happiness here and liberation after death to Saphala's observer. Those devoted to it are called blessed and their birth fruitful. Reading, hearing and observing are assigned merit comparable with a Rajasuya sacrifice. The separate colophon identifies chapter 40 as Pausha's dark Saphala Ekadashi within the Uttara section's Umapati–Narada dialogue; the immediate exchange is Krishna–Yudhishthira. All 49 numbered positions and colophon are covered in this condensed original prose. These religious rewards do not guarantee wealth, power, health or afterlife outcomes. The story does not erase accountability for harm. Fasting, vigils, gifts and purchases are optional; safe food, water, clothing, sleep and care continue. The linked hub's dates are not redetermined here.

Roman Hindi meaning: Surya uday hone tak Vishnu ke jane ka kathan hai.
