Selected reading version. Scope and sources

This is Valkala's own retelling of the katha in Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda 6.48.1–25, Sanskrit Wikisource revision 336429, not a transcription of the original text. The source it follows is cited under "Verification and sources".

Yudhishthir Vasudev ko namaskar karke Vaishakh ke Krishna paksh ki Ekadashi ka naam aur mahatmya poochhte hain. Krishna ise Varuthini batate hain. Ve is vrat ko is lok aur parlok ka saubhagya, sukh aur paap se mukti dene wala kehte hain. Granth ki dharmik bhasha mein kathin paristhiti wali stri ke saubhagya, sabke bhog aur moksh tatha garbhavas arthaat punarjanm se chhutkare ki prashansa aati hai.

Krishna udaharan mein Mandhata aur Dhundhumar aadi rajaon ki svarg-prapti tatha Bhav arthaat Shiva ke Brahma-kapal se mukt hone ka sankshipt ullekh karte hain. Yahan Mandhata ke saath kisi vanya pashu ka vistaar se prasang nahin hai. Ve Varuthini ke phal ki tulna das hazar varshon ki tapasya aur Kurukshetra mein suryagrahan par svarn-bhar dene se karte hain. Shraddha se iska palan yahan aur aage ichchhit phal, pavitrata tatha bhog-mukti se joda gaya hai.

Yeh granth ke mahatmya-daave aur chhote udaharan hain, aitihasik ghatnaon ka praman ya sukh, vivah, punarjanm aur grah-dosh ka nishchit samadhan nahin. Stri ka durbhagya naitik dosh nahin hai aur vrat na rakhna kisi ki garima ya sahayata ke adhikar ko kam nahin karta.

English meaning: Yudhishthira greets Vasudeva and asks which Ekadashi belongs to Vaishakha's dark fortnight and what its significance is. Krishna names Varuthini. He praises it as bringing good fortune, happiness and release from sin here and beyond. Within the chapter's religious language, its praise includes a woman in adverse circumstances, enjoyment and liberation for all, and release from womb-dwelling, understood as rebirth. Krishna briefly invokes Mandhata and kings such as Dhundhumara reaching heaven, and Bhava, Shiva, becoming free of Brahma's skull. No extended wild-animal episode involving Mandhata occurs here. He compares its merit to ten thousand years of austerity and a weight of gold given at Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse. Faithful observance is associated with desired benefits here and beyond, purification, enjoyment and liberation. These are the chapter's devotional claims and brief examples, not verified history or assured remedies for hardship, marriage, rebirth or planetary troubles. Adversity is not a woman's moral fault, and not observing a vow does not reduce anyone's dignity or entitlement to help.

Roman Hindi meaning: Yudhishthir Vasudev ko namaskar karke Vaishakh ke Krishna paksh ki Ekadashi ka naam aur mahatmya poochhte hain.

Krishna daan ki tulna mein ghode se hathi, usse bhoomi, phir til, svarn aur annadaan ko badhte kram mein rakhte hain. Ann se pitar, dev aur manushya tript hote hain, isliye annadaan ki vishesh prashansa hai. Ve kanyadaan aur godaan ko uske saman kehte hain tatha ullikhit daanon mein vidyadaan ko shreshth batate hain. Varuthini ke palan ko usi dharmik phal ke saath joda jata hai.

Apni kshamata ke anusar alankrit kanya ke vivah ka punya itna bataya gaya hai ki Chitragupt bhi uski ganana nahin kar sakte. Yeh phal phir Varuthini se joda jata hai.

English meaning: Krishna ranks gifts in an ascending comparison: horse, elephant, land, sesame, gold and food. Food is especially praised because it nourishes ancestors, gods and people. He places the marriage-associated gift of a daughter and a cow gift alongside food-giving, then calls knowledge-giving foremost among the gifts discussed. Varuthini observance is associated with the same religious merit. The discussion condemns living on money associated with a daughter and making marriage a transaction through greed. Its religious warnings include loss of merit, torment in hell and rebirth as a cat. The merit of arranging the marriage of an adorned daughter according to one's capacity is described as beyond even Chitragupta's reckoning. That merit is again associated with Varuthini. This ancient marriage-and-gift vocabulary licenses no buying or selling of women, ownership, child marriage, coercion or financial demand. Consent and personal dignity remain paramount. Animal gifts, jewellery purchases and expenditure are not conditions of this reader; voluntary help with education or food may stay within one's means.

Krishna Dashami ke das tyajyon mein kansa, maans, masoor, chana, kodrav, shaak, madhu, doosre ka ann, dobara bhojan aur maithun ka ullekh karte hain. Ekadashi ki soochi mein jua, khel, neend, tambool, daant saaf karna, parninda, chugli, chori, hinsa, rati, krodh aur jhooth aate hain. Dvadashi mein kansa, maans, madira, madhu, tel, paath dwara patit kahe gaye logon se baatcheet, vyayam, yatra, dobara bhojan, maithun, bail ki peeth par chadhna aur masoor ka ann chhodne ki baat hai.

Aage varnit vidhi se Varuthini karne ko paap-kshay aur ant mein akshay gati se joda gaya hai. Raat ka jagaran aur Madhusudan ki pooja param gati ki prashansa mein aate hain. Krishna paap ke bhay aur Kshapari arthaat Surya ke putra se bhaybheet vyakti ke liye bhi Varuthini ka ullekh karte hain; tulna-paath is putra ko Shani samajhta hai. Padhne-sunne ka phal hazar gayon ke daan ke saman tatha Vishnulok mein samman bataya gaya hai. Alag samapan-vakya adhyay 48 aur Umapati-Narad samvad mein Vaishakh Krishna Varuthini ka naam deta hai; bahar ka prashnottar Krishna-Yudhishthir ka hai.

Dharmik phal nishchit parinam nahin hain; padhne ke liye upavas, jagaran ya daan avashyak nahin.

English meaning: Krishna's ten Dashami exclusions name bell-metal, meat, lentils, chickpeas, kodrava grain, greens, honey, another person's food, a second meal and sexual relations. The Ekadashi discussion lists gambling, play, sleep, betel, tooth-cleaning, disparagement, malicious gossip, theft, violence, sexual activity, anger and false speech. Dvadashi's exclusions include bell-metal, meat, liquor, honey, oil, conversation with people the source labels fallen, exercise, travel, a second meal, sexual relations, riding a bull and lentil food. The described observance is associated with destruction of sin and an imperishable destination at life's end. Night vigil and worship of Madhusudana appear in praise of the highest destination. Krishna also mentions fear of sin and fear of the son of Kshapari, the Sun; the comparison understands this son as Saturn. Reading and hearing are praised as equal to giving a thousand cows and receiving honour in Vishnu's world. The separate chapter-48 colophon names Vaishakha's dark Varuthini within the Umapati–Narada dialogue; the immediate framing remains Krishna–Yudhishthira. This is a descriptive retelling of the whole chapter, not a mandatory diet or vow checklist. Do not withhold food, water, sleep, dental hygiene or necessary treatment. Do not turn the social exclusion into present-day discrimination or planetary fear into required spending or remedies. Religious rewards are not assured outcomes; reading requires no fast, vigil or donation.

Sources and reuse

The complete pinned Wikisource API chapter revision 336429 controls this adaptation under CC BY-SA 4.0. Its exact text was read in full and compared throughout with Wisdomlib's Sanskrit presentation and full grouped English chapter. Wikisource rendered retrieval failed; no rendered inspection is claimed for this batch. These electronic presentations do not establish independent print collation. No modern translated prose is copied.

Selected wording and comparison differences

The selected Sanskrit repeats punarbhojana, a second meal, in the Dashami/Dvadashi lists; the grouped English comparison says food generally. The Sanskrit's ten-thousand-year austerity clause is retained even though the grouped English omits it. Marriage/money wording is described broadly without treating a woman as property or converting an uncertain construction into a modern dowry rule.

Safe reading and accountability

Rewards, sin, heaven, rebirth, offspring, marriage and social exclusions are ancient religious claims, not guaranteed outcomes or judgments of present-day people. Do not withhold food, water, sleep, hygiene or treatment, endorse discrimination, require gifts or replace accountability with ritual. Dates remain on the festival hub; the chapter is not a date or clock-time source.
