दुर्गे दुर्घट भारी तुजविण संसारीं ॥ अनाथनाथे अंबे करुणा विस्तारी ॥
वारी वारी जन्म मरणातें वारीं ॥ हारीं पडलों आतां संकट निवारीं ॥ १ ॥

Durge Durghat Bhari Tujvin Sansari || Anathnathe Ambe Karuna Vistari ||
Vari Vari Janma Maranate Vari || Hari Padlo Aata Sankat Nivari || 1 ||
Jaydevi Jaydevi Mahishasurmathani || Survar Ishvar Var De Tarak Sanjivani || Dhru ||

English meaning: The devotee addresses Durga: without you, this worldly life (संसार) is hard to get through and heavy. O Amba, protector of those who have no protector, spread out your compassion. Ward off, ward off, ward off the round of birth and death; I have fallen into defeat, so now remove this trouble. The refrain, written in full only here and marked ध्रु०, hails the goddess as the one who crushed Mahishasura. Its second half can be read in two ways: as calling her the one who grants boons to the foremost gods and to the Lord (the 1910 reprint hyphenates it as one compound, सुर-वर-ईश्वर-वर-दे), or as a string of addresses; either way she is called तारक, the one who carries across, and संजिवनी, the one who restores life. These are the aarti's prayers and praises, not promised results.

Roman Hindi meaning: Bhakt Durga se kehta hai: tumhare bina yeh sansaar kathin aur bhaari hai. He Ambe, anathon ki naath, apni karuna phailao. Janm-mrityu ke chakra ko door karo, door karo, door karo; main haar kar gir pada hoon, ab yeh sankat hatao. Tek, jo keval yahin poori likhi hai aur 'Dhru' se chihnit hai, Devi ki Mahishasur ka mardan karne wali ke roop mein jaykar karti hai. Uska doosra bhaag do tarah padha ja sakta hai: shreshth devtaon aur Ishvar ko var dene wali (1910 ka punarmudran ise ek samaas 'sur-var-ishvar-var-de' chhaapta hai), ya sambodhanon ki ek ladi; dono mein Devi ko 'tarak' (paar lagane wali) aur 'sanjivani' (jeevan lautane wali) kaha gaya hai. Ye aarti ki prarthanayein aur stutiyan hain, nishchit phal ka vachan nahin.

The 1878 वारी वारी without anusvara is kept; the 1910 anusvaras and hyphen do not change the sense.

त्रिभुवन भवनीं पाहतां तुजऐशी नाहीं ॥ चारी श्रमले परंतु न बोलवे कांहीं ॥
साही विवादितां पडले प्रवाहीं ॥ तें तूं भक्तालागीं पावसि लवलाहीं ॥ २ ॥ जय० ॥

Tribhuvan Bhavani Pahata Tujaishi Nahi || Chari Shramle Parantu Na Bolve Kahi ||
Sahi Vivadita Padle Pravahi || Te Tu Bhaktalagi Pavasi Lavlahi || 2 || Jay ||

English meaning: Looking through the dwellings of the three worlds, there is none like you. 'The four' grew weary, yet could not put you into words, and 'the six', arguing, were swept away in the current. The text gives only the numbers; they are usually understood as the four Vedas and the six schools of philosophy (darśanas). Yet you come swiftly (लवलाहीं) to reach your devotee. जय० cues the refrain. The 1910 reprint misprints भवनीं as भवमीं and reads ते for तें; the 1878 readings are kept.

Roman Hindi meaning: Teenon lokon ke bhavanon mein dekhne par bhi tumhare jaisi koi nahin hai. 'Charon' thak gaye, phir bhi tumhara varnan na kar sake, aur 'chhahon' vaad-vivaad karte hue pravah mein beh gaye. Paath keval sankhyayein deta hai; aksar inhein chaar Ved aur chhah darshan samjha jata hai. Phir bhi tum apne bhakt ke liye turant (lavlahi) pahunchti ho. 'Jay' tek ki or sanket hai.

३ ॥ जयदेवी० ॥

Prasanna Vadane Prasanna Hosi Nijdasa || Klesha Pasun Sodi Todi Bhavpasha ||
Ambe Tuj Vanchun Kon Purvil Aasha || Narhari Tallin Jhala Pad Pankajkosha || 3 || Jaydevi ||

English meaning: With a gracious face you become gracious to your own servant. Free him from his afflictions and cut the noose of worldly existence. O Amba, without you, who will fulfil my hope? The last line is the signature: Narahari has become absorbed in the lotus-cup of your feet (पद पंकजकोशा). जयदेवी० cues the refrain. The aarti is popularly attributed to Samarth Ramdas, but every print inspected here signs it नरहरि and none prints it among Ramdas's works, so Valkala presents it as traditional, with the signatory named. Freedom from affliction and from worldly bondage is the devotee's prayer, not a guaranteed result.

Use kleshon se chhudao aur sansaar ka phanda tod do. He Ambe, tumhare bina meri aasha kaun poori karega? Antim pankti naammudra hai: Narhari tumhare charan-kamal ke kosh mein tallin ho gaya hai. 'Jaydevi' tek ki or sanket hai.

The 1878 क्लेशा पासुन is kept; the 1910 पासुनि is an older form of the same postposition, and its hyphens are presentation.

Stanza 3 — signature line Spelling

The 1878 spelling is kept. Both prints sign नरहरि (bold in 1910); तल्लिन, वांचुन and the analysed पद-पंक-ज-कोशा are spelling and presentation.

What is Durge Durghat Bhari Aarti?

Durge Durghat Bhari (Jai Devi Jai Devi Mahishasurmathani) is the Marathi aarti to Goddess Durga sung in Maharashtra during Navratri and Ganeshotsav. This page gives all three stanzas and the refrain as printed in an 1878 Bombay anthology, transcribed from the page image, with a fresh Roman reading and original English, Hindi, Roman-Hindi and Marathi meanings. It is often credited to Samarth Ramdas, but its last line is signed नरहरि (Narahari), so Valkala presents it as traditional with that signature named. Differences in a 1910 reprint are disclosed, not blended.

Complete selected edition

All three stanzas and the refrain follow printed page 373 (scan leaf 379) of Navanit athva Marathi kavitanche venche, the Marathi poetry anthology first compiled by Parashurampant Godbole, in the new edition published by the Government Central Book Depot, Bombay, in 1878. The aarti appears there under the heading आरती देवीवरची, after the Ganpati aarti Sukhkarta Dukhharta and the Vitthal aarti Yuge Atthavis, and ends the anthology's aarti section. As in the print, the refrain is written out once after the first stanza and cued after the others; sing it after every stanza. This is a different aarti from the Hindi Jai Ambe Gauri on the Ambe Gauri Aarti page.

Attribution: signed Narahari

Durge Durghat Bhari is often credited to Samarth Ramdas. The last line of every print inspected for this page, however, reads नरहरि तल्लीन झाला पद पंकजकोशा, so the aarti is signed Narahari; the 1878 anthology prints it without an author's name, and it was not found in the 1891 edition of Ramdas's collected works. Valkala therefore presents it as a traditional aarti with the signatory named, and does not identify Narahari further, because these prints do not.

Text and comparison note

The 1878 page was read twice from the image. The 1910 reprint of the anthology's 1882 revision was compared; it hyphenates compounds and reads अ-नाथ-नाथे, महिषासुर-मथिनी, संजिविनी, क्लेशापासुनि and तल्लिन, and misprints भवनीं as भवमीं. None of these readings is imported. Line breaks at the half-line daṇḍas are the only presentation change, and no word is emended.

Reading and claims

In many Maharashtra homes this aarti is sung to the goddess during Navratri and in the evening aarti sequence of Ganeshotsav; it is an optional devotional reading, not a required ritual. Its words about removing trouble, ending the round of birth and death and fulfilling hope are the aarti's prayers, not guaranteed outcomes. No fast, offering, purchase, flame or fixed count is required by this page.
