Ganesh Idol Direction at Home: Placement, Trunk Direction and Main Door

Keep Ganesha in the home shrine, ideally in the north-east, facing outward. A left-turning trunk is the usual household choice, but that rule is custom, not scripture. At the main door, the image faces into the home.

Quick answer: Keep your Ganesh idol in the home shrine, ideally in the north-east of the home, on a raised surface and facing outward towards you. Most households choose an idol whose trunk turns to Ganesha's left (vamamukhi). The right-turning form (dakshinabhimukhi) is traditionally said to need stricter daily worship. That trunk rule is temple and Vastu custom. It is not a scriptural command, and a right-trunk idol you already have is not "wrong". At the main door, a Ganesha image faces into the home.

Where to place a Ganesh idol

• In the shrine: the classical shrine zone is the north-east (Brihat Samhita 53.118). See home temple direction for alternatives in flats.
• Facing: outward, towards the worshipper. Most guides pair this with the devotee facing east or north. See facing direction during puja.
• Height: on a chowki or shelf, at or above seated eye level.
• Avoid: current guides advise against a bathroom wall, and many families avoid keeping a worship idol in the bedroom.

Trunk left or right: what the rule is, and what it is not

The trunk is described from Ganesha's own side, so "left" means his left.

• Vamamukhi (trunk curving to his left): the most common form in homes and shops, and the one usually recommended for households.
• Dakshinabhimukhi (trunk curving to his right): traditionally regarded as more powerful and more demanding. It is said to call for strict purity and unbroken routine, which is why it is often associated with temples such as Siddhivinayak.
• Straight trunk: rare. Some guides suggest it for offices. That is outside this cluster's scope.

The Svastika guide we checked states that no Purana, Agama or Shilpa Shastra passage lays down a household ban on the right-trunk form. The classical texts classify Ganapati by named form, arms, posture and consort, not by the curve of the trunk. So the rule is real custom that many families follow, but it is custom. If you already have a right-trunk idol, keep it with the same regular, respectful worship you would give any image. Ganesha at the main door

Many homes place a small Ganesha image or tile at the entrance. Current guidance places it beside the door rather than directly above the frame, with the image facing into the home. Some families put a second image back-to-back so that Ganesha also faces outward. This is regional custom. The main-door image is a mark of welcome and remembrance, not a replacement for the image in your shrine.

How many Ganesh idols?

Keep one main Ganesha image for daily worship in the shrine. Other small Ganesha figures elsewhere in the home are common. Let the shrine image be the one you offer to regularly.
