What is Ekadashi?

Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi (lunar day) of each paksha, so it falls twice a month: once in the waxing Shukla paksha and once in the waning Krishna paksha. Drik Panchang describes it as a fast kept by devotees of Vishnu to seek his blessings. Each of the 24 Ekadashis of the year has its own name, such as Nirjala, Devshayani or Dev Uthani, and its own vrat katha. In years with an extra (Adhik) month, two more Ekadashis are added.

Why some Ekadashis have two dates

Sometimes the Ekadashi tithi spans two sunrises, and panchangs then suggest fasting on two consecutive days. Drik Panchang advises that Smarta householders keep the first day, and notes that the second day coincides with the Vaishnava fast, which ISKCON and many Vaishnava communities follow. This page lists the Smarta date for New Delhi and shows the Vaishnava date beside it when it falls a day later, as it does for Kamika and Rama Ekadashi in 2027. Follow the calendar of your own family, temple or sampradaya.

How the fast is traditionally kept

Drik Panchang describes Ekadashi fasting as spanning three days: a single meal the day before, the fast on Ekadashi, and breaking the fast (parana) the next day after sunrise. Grains and cereals are traditionally avoided. Devotees choose beforehand whether to fast without water, with water, with fruit or with one simple meal, according to their strength. None of this is compulsory. Anyone who is unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication should take appropriate advice before fasting.

When Ekadashi and Pradosh fall together

Ekadashi is usually followed by Pradosh vrat two days later, but sometimes the two fall on consecutive days. For people who keep both, Drik Panchang suggests a symbolic parana with water only, then continuing into the Pradosh fast. Choose what is safe for you.

How these dates were checked

Every date on this page is for New Delhi and was checked on 29 September 2026. Each 2027 Ekadashi appears in Drik Panchang, Prokerala and AstroSage on the same day, and each 2026 date in Drik Panchang and Prokerala. Pausha Putrada Ekadashi 2027 is not listed yet: Drik Panchang gives 18 January for Smartas and 19 January for Vaishnavas, and a second source for the Smarta date has not been found. No clock times are shown; check your local panchang for the tithi window and parana time.
